Editorial Reviews

A harried, burned-out cop believes that a recent string of murders prove that the murderer might be a deer-like creature in the form of a beautiful woman right from a local Native America folklore legend.

I haven't been quite as enamored with the Masters Of Horror series as a lot of fans, but there have been a few real stand-out episodes, and two of them - "Deer Woman" and "Sick Girl" are included on this disc. They picked a good pair to team up on here - not only are they among the series's best, both are creature-oriented, sexy, genuinely funny horror-comedies. Of the two, Deer Woman plays more to the humorous side of things while the horror elements are stronger in Sick Girl, but both are effective hybrids.

In Deer Woman, a string of bizarre murders have been occuring, and a worn-down, formerly effective cop who's no longer taken seriously by his fellow officers, develops an even more bizarre theory to explain all these corpses that have been ground into so much hamburger by what appear to be hooves. After playing through various possibilities in his head (some great comedic moments here) he comes to the theory that a Native American legend about a 'deer woman' (who's played here by the gorgeous Cinthia Moury) is at the root of all this, then sets out to find her.

In Sick Girl, the budding romance between entymologist (bug scientist) Angela Bettis and receptionist Erin Brown is rudely interrupted by the strange specimen the former has recently received from deep in the uncharted jungles. It's a weird little bug, with far stranger and deadlier habits than it first appears, and it's about to throw a very unsettling monkeywrench into the couple's new romance. The romantic angle is sexy, sweet and funny, the bug angle freakish and disturbing, and it all mixes together nicely. The only drawback is that they could have definately used a bigger budget for some of the more ambitious special effects.

Overall, a great double feature of episodes that compliment each other well, and two of the best installments from the Masters Of Horror line.
