Editorial Reviews

Self-recorded, mixed, and mastered in rehearsal spaces and band members' basements with no engineers or outside input, Deerhoof vs. Evil dresses up Deerhoof's wellknown recklessness in a newfound elastic groove -- one filled with big-hit choruses and exuberantly unfamiliar colors. The musical equivalent of hormones raging out of control, the record explodes out of the speakers with its gawky triumph and inflamed sentimentality. This is Deerhoof's ode to their own adolescence. This is Deerhoof vs. Evil.

How gratifying to see a band continue to evolve in such a positive way. This CD is such a rewarding step along the twisted path of Deerhoof's musical journey. I wouldn't want to single out a particular song. Every song is great, all are different, but
all are so clearly identifiable as Deerhoof. Totally genre-defying, touching, delightful, exciting and fresh. Everyone in the band makes such a unique and vital contribution to the Deerhoof sound. I had the great pleasure of hearing them live recently in NYC, and they totally blew the roof off the place. I would be remiss, however, in not making special mention of Greg Saunier, undoubtedly one of the finest rock drummers alive today.... plus he has a fantastic sining voice, which perfectly complements Satomi's vocals.

If you want to hear the sound of a band constantly challenging itself, reinvigorating itself, and inviting the audience to come along for the wild ride, GRAB THIS!!!!

I've been a Deerhoof fan for years now but i didn't expect this album to be so dang good! The sound quality is fantastic and the songs are catchy and fun without compromising the Deerhoof aesthetic. at 32 minutes it's over way too soon but i solved that by putting it on repeat. I guarantee this will make my Top 20 for 2011 (probably in the top 10)!

Sometimes the greatest albums are the ones that don't immediately hit you, (sometimes not). All I can say is that it took a couple or more listens to truly get this cd. When it hit, it hit hard. It is impossible to describe the beauty, logic and sonic creativity of this recording. There are so many moods and ideas presented, not to mention musical spaces, that its impossible to describe with words, post rock ones anyway. I've heard very few recordings, classical, jazz, what have you, that are this perfect, surprising, intelligent and emotionally moving. This is a musical masterpiece in any genre.

Took me a while to appreciate this album. I was disappointed at how light it sounded compared to their last album Offend Maggie which is a masterpiece of heaviosity.

Now every time I play this I get shivers and goosebumps at its many moments of sheer beauty:
* the twin guitar riff that keeps interrupting the chorus of "Behold a Marvel"
* the interlude of "Noone Asked to Dance" where harpsicord and bass join the spanish guitar
* "Super Duper Rescue Heads!" sublime pop melody
* the gentle call and response between Satomi and John in "Must Fight Current"
* the fuzzy, delicate guitar that leads into the explosive close of "Secret Mobilisation"
* "Hey I Can"s sly Devo rhythm and guitar line

So as it turns out, another Deerhoof classic. I'm now convinced they're one of the great rock bands. I love them as much as I ever loved the Beach Boys, Big Star, Talking Heads, Husker Du and Sonic Youth.

Heard Secret Mobilization on the radio. Loved it so much that I needed the album.

Lots of catchy hooks.
Unfortunately each song, and the album as a whole, is a little short for me. A good thing about this, though, is that none of the songs feel repetitive.
And speaking of lack of repetition, I just love how every song changes significantly from the initial rhythm and tune.

Really creative band that is quickly becoming one of my favorites!
