Several good songs on this album but several songs didn't have the same feel. And I totally get no one wants to keep cranking out all the same stuff, but this album is just not making me love it all as much as previous ones have. Still overall it's a good album by a fabulous band.

Band of Skulls has come strong with their latest album. They blend a bluesy rock sound with the duo vocals very well. Black Magic and Little Mamma are two of my favorite tracks. If you have enjoyed previous Band of Skulls records, then you will not be disappointed here.

It is a departure from their regular sound. Less female vocals and the male vocals sounds like a different singer. But it is a good rock album as always. I suspect after I listen to it for a while I will like it more. UPDATE - After listening to it a few times I like a lot. It's worth buying.

my first foray into this bands library. i think this rules. killer is a killer track. pun intended. all the others kick too. catchy while still rocking. soulful while still straightforward. im on the lookout for this band now.

Great music from the mothership...UK!

Their best album so far, and that's saying something. The songs flow really well into each other, and there is no filler on this album.

Without doubt, the weakest Band Of Skulls album so far
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2017
Sadly, By Default, Band Of Skulls' fourth album, is a real disappointment, compared with their other three albums. It seems to lack the kind of spark that made their other material so exciting and pleasurable to listen to, like they have lost their talent for writing the hooks that were distributed so prolifically through their previous records. By Default isn't a terrible album, but the sheer ordinary nature of the majority of the tracks here makes it a very underwhelming listening experience. They never were the most original of bands, but the songwriting and uncompromising, wholehearted performances meant that their songs were the kind of music people sat up and listened to, whereas too much of By Default washes over me, leaving not a great deal that anyone could call memorable in its wake. Even characteristically full-throated performances can't improve the end result; if a song isn't that great, then playing it with volume and power isn't going to help.
I bought this album when it was released last year and just about forgot its existence; listening to it now, I can understand why. This is by far the weakest thing that Band Of Skulls have released so far and the fact that powerhouse drummer Matt Hayward left the band not long after this was released is an indication that all isn't well in the Band Of Skulls' world. It's a real shame that after three excellent albums they find themselves so bereft of ideas and an original band member down, but hopefully this won't spell the end of the Southampton group. Perhaps some time out to write some killer material (and not material like Killer) and a new drummer will kick some life back into what once was one of the most exciting rock trios in the country. As for this album, I'd personally recommend avoiding it.

So disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 22, 2016
I really like the band of Skulls - their first 3 studio albums are excellent and the 2 live albums (Brixton and Southampton) capture their live act perfectly. So very keen to get hold of the latest offering - but oh so disappointing. A change of style - and a change for the worse. I have tried to get into the songs but really can't pin any one of them down. Each time I finish I just get a bleh feeling - bland and mediocre. Sorry but this CD is heading for the discard pile. Two stars - well, really one but two because I hope they can take note and produce the goods next time.

Bit of a Let-Down
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 25, 2017
Has the feel of a Band running out of inspiration. A number of highly repetitive tracks, sadly repeating ideas that were not very good in the first place. I'm really sad because I've only just discovered Band of Skulls, and this was my second CD from them after Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, and I'm going to need to listen hard to the next one I think of buying, before buying it.
