America is at war. The fight against global jihad has cost 7,000 American lives and almost $2 trillion, and yet, most Americans do not understand what is at stake. The public lacks knowledge and safety because two presidents and their administrations neglected the most basic strategic question: who is the enemy?
Presidents Bush and Obama both named the global jihadi movementa movement with an intent to destroy the Westviolent extremism.” Their tidy term was an attempt to maintain peace with the Muslim community. But when they failed to appropriately name the enemy, they failed to fully understand Islamic extremism. This failure is why the U.S. has been in Afghanistan for sixteen years with no end in sight.
But this war is eminently winnable if we remove our ideological blinders, accurately name our enemy, and draw up a strategy to defeat the ideas that inspire terrorism. So says Dr. Sebastian Gorka, one of the most experienced and sought-after authorities on counterterrorism.
Dr. Gorka has been one of the intelligence community’s go-to experts on counterterrorism since 9/11. He’s been called to brief Congress and the Marine Corps and was asked to analyze the Patriot’s Day Boston Marathon Bombing for the US government. Dr. Gorka’s report for the trial of Dzhokhar "Jahar" Tsarnaev was widely circulated in counterterrorism circles and the media because it accurately painted a picture, not of a teenager on the cover of Rolling Stone, but of a terrorist.
Dr. Gorka is respected by peers because he understands our enemy is not "terror" or "violent extremism." Our enemy is the global jihadi movement, a modern totalitarian ideology rooted in the doctrines and martial history of Islam whose goals are to build an empire, suppress false Muslims,” and engage in guerilla warfare against infidels.
Taking his cue from the formerly top-secret analyses that shaped the U.S. response to the communist threat, Dr. Gorka has produced a compelling profile of the jihadi movementits mind and motivationand a plan to defeat it.

"With ISIS even more dangerous than Al Qaeda, it is time to listen to what [Dr. Gorka] has to say."
-- "Congressman Trent Franks""Concise, clear, and constructively combative, Dr. Gorka's book stands apart in its depth of understanding of Islamist terrorists and what their ultimate defeat demands of us."
-- "Ralph Peters, Fox News strategic analyst"From the Inside Flap
Since September 11, 2001, America has been at war. And that’s about all anyone can say with certainty about a conflict that has cost 7,000 American lives and almost $2 trillion. As long as the most basic strategic questionsWho is the enemy? Why are we fighting?remain unanswered, victory is impossible.
Yet this war is eminently winnable if we remove our ideological blinders and apply basic strategic principles. That means accu- rately naming the enemy, understanding his plan, and drawing up a strategy to defeat him. So says Dr. Sebastian Gorka, one of the most experienced and sought-after authorities on counterterrorism.
Our enemy is not terror” or violent extremism.” Our enemy is the global jihadi movement, a modern totalitarian ideology rooted in the doctrines and martial history of Islam. America has defeated totalitarian enemies before. Providing a desperately needed dose of clarity, Dr. Gorka shows how we can do it again.
He reveals how a toxic political agenda has corrupted our national security practices, precluding the kind of clear-eyed threat analysis and strategic response that led to victory in the Cold War. Bracing, troubling, but ultimately encouraging, Defeating Jihad fills that gap.

The cleverest feature of Dr. Gorka’s argument is that we do not yet have the equivalent of George Kennan’s Long Telegram, which he reproduces in an eighteen page appendix. That message Dr. Gorka calls a case study in what the intelligence community refers to as an enemy threat doctrine analysis. Simply stated, what Defeating Jihad does is to update Kennan’s Long Telegram to define jihad as a threat doctrine, an imminent, existential one for America. It’s an inescapable, almost intuitive conclusion, made unnecessarily perplexing by the Obama Administration’s inability to grasp it.
Just as Paul Nitze’s NSC-68 constituted what intelligence analysts call a strategic response plan (responding to the conclusions Kennan reached), Dr. Gorka’s repurposed Long Telegram requires a comparable strategic response. This the author provides in a four and a half page Afterword (which could very well serve as the outline to a follow up book – or an updated NSC directive). It contains such prescriptions, again obvious to the politically literate reader, as designating the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization, reimposing sanctions on Iran, recognizing the subversive objectives of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Public Affairs Council, and expanding human intelligence penetration into jihadist organizations. Above all the White House must recognize that jihadis are the enemy and that jihad is their threat doctrine. We are not in a war against terrorism or violent extremism; we are in a war against jihad. And there is no such thing as a lone wolf jihadi.
When this reviewer finished the last page of Defeating Jihad he reached for his iPhone and sent an email to President-elect Trump suggesting he designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.
I don't know if I agree that radical Islam is akin to the Communist threat but it is a starting point. I believe that with Communism we were dealing with a country and a government that wanted power more than an idea. Where radical Islam is an idea that has spread to the four corners of the earth thanks to our not taking it seriously. We seem to want to fight each other more than the people cutting off heads and burning people alive. Which speaks volumes about the health of our country.
I enjoyed the mentions of George Kennan and Paul Nittze's work on defeating the Soviet Union. We always hear Reagan did it. It's nice to see the architects mentioned instead of just the general contractor.
I liked the brief run down of the radical jihadi's who have made up this ideology. Mawdudi, Sayyid Qutb, Abdullah Azzam, SK MAlik, Bin LAden, and Zawahiri. Most Americans don't know who these people are. But you should if you want to understand the ideology we are up against.
As usual Dr. Gorka being a recent immigrant to this country and wanting to be part of it and not separate understands freedom and our founding documents better than people who have been here 200 years. It is why immigration and assimilation is so important. People should love the freedom and opportunity this country's founding documents give them and want to defend them with their blood.
In the end it will be the ideas of freedom and liberty that will defeat this hate and not counter-insurgency and bombs. Yes the pointy end of the spear needs to be bloodied but the main focus should be spreading sunlight to the festering idea of radical Islam. But we have to get our own house in order if we are to be successful.
The authors begins the book with the account of Paul, someone close to the author, whose country of Hungary was overrun and occupied by Communists before the author was born. This introduction is stunning, and drives home the saying the freedom is priceless and fragile. The author comes across as very sincere, and toward the end he provides other resources the reader can turn to for more (often free) learning, such as the internet-based websites and reports, some of which he and his wife are editors/facilitators.
