I really wanted the Defender to be all that it says it is but unfortunately it fell short of expectations. Having setup and used three different security camera systems, two from Lorex and one system from Uniden. I was really interested in seeing how the Defender would stack up against the Lorex systems that we have at work, so I eagerly put this unit through it's paces and in the end I think the best kind of review for the Defender is the Good the Bad and the Ugly type.

The Good:

1) Solid Camera design, no flimsy metal, feels a lot tougher than any of the other brands I have used.

2) Daytime picture Quality is better than any of the other systems.

3) The DVR/Control unit is nicely made, it small and feels very solid. It boots up perfectly and the menu system is fairly extensive with lots of features and its laid out pretty well.

4) 2TB of hard drive space in insanely great to have, this unit will probably record for a month or more with all cameras going.

5) Lots of ports on the back, from Analog VGA to HDMI. Ethernet, PTZ control for movable cameras and Video out and Audio input. It has exactly 4 camera inputs so no expansion is available. Also it only seems to have one audio port and none of the included cameras has audio.

6) Full frame rate adjustment on recording, from 1-30 frames for each camera.

7) Loved the fact that they included a quality HDMI and Ethernet cable in the box.

The Bad:

1) Forget 150ft of night time vision, I tested it and got about 40ft of usable range for making out faces, maybe about 70ft to see the clear shape of a person, but that's about it. Yes you can see a building 150ft away, just barely.

I recently installed the Defender 21158 Sentinel Pro Widescreen 150-ft 4CH Security system at my special needs center. I put these outside and they were a little harder to install for me, but it all worked out. Since I've been using this Lorex camera, DVR and app system since January, I can compare the two systems.

Installation:
Installation fairly easy (two person job as I needed help from my dad). Connect cables and screw into wall or ceiling. Template for pre-holes for screws. Run cords to one location (we had two levels so all cables reached through hole up to send floor and into DVR with tons of left over cable. (Tied up each one so they didn't become a mess). Cameras have a little wrench that helps position then to where you want to view.

The wires are comparable to the wires that came with the Lorex system, except the Defender wires are much longer for outside usage. The quality is about the same.

Easy connection map for set up with camera cables and DVR.

App:
Installed iPhone app and had cameras working in less than five minutes! I have the original iPhone 5.

App is easy to use and I have used it to watch what's going on at office from any location. You can take still photos on a specified camera on app. You can create a clip from a camera in real time. You can go back and play from a specific camera by day.

You can look at one camera by itself or split the screen in four or have one camera bigger with the rest small around it for viewing. Lots of options and touch the camera shown on the app to arrange the order you want to view in. Hope that makes sense.

The App is similar to the app I use for the Lorex. They maneuver a little different, but both are user friendly.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've learned a lot about surveillance systems recently, having researched, selected, installed, and tweaked both this and a LaView model with four cameras and eight channels. This Defender model has a price tag more than double the LaView, but its specs clearly justify that. But although this is an excellent product, having experience with another brand shows me neither are perfect:

Overall. The Defender comes with a more solid looking DVR and a couple extra cables (i.e., Ethernet and HDMI), making it appear more premium right out of the box. However, the AAA batteries (worst kind of batteries anything could take price/power-wise) for the remote came DOA which was totally lame. Both units come with very cheap mice, rectifiers, remotes, and cables.

-Most people into this kind of stuff have extra of these things around anyway, so it's not a big deal.
-The cables look and work fine, but they are not actually coax in the shielding/cladding sense. After cutting the ends off mine during installation anyway, I'd recommend planning to buy your coax on a roll (especially when you have some runs >60') and maybe getting a boxed power supply rather than using multiple awkward rectifier packs.
-The Defender had issues pushing HDMI output past 25', which the LaView did not, which could be an issue if you're planning to view your output on your TV far from your Telecom Closet (TC).

DVR. The LaView has D1 cameras, but only the first two channels can record D1@30fps, while the other channels can do CIF@30fps or D1@6fps (bogus). The Defender can record all four channels WD1@30fps.

Using NTSC in N. America, WD1 is 960x480 resolution. This is also referred to as 960H.
