Classical liberalism, in contrast to contemporary liberalism, is a philosophy of limited government and personal liberty, much like today’s libertarianism. With the help of hundreds of academic sources the authors of this book argue that policies which maximize economic and personal liberties can accelerate economic growth, raise living standards, lead to desirable societal outcomes, and alleviate poverty. Such policies include those of free markets, free trade, and free immigration. The authors also examine and dispel many of the common myths involving many contemporary economic and social issues. Is it true that immigrants take American jobs? Do women really get paid less than men for the same amount of work? Did the wealthy really pay over 90% of their income in taxes in the past? Does government spending really alleviate unemployment? These are just of the few of the questions the authors provide in-depth answers to. The book also covers topics such as income inequality, international trade, the economic impacts of government taxation and spending, immigration, minimum wage laws, tax reform, and more. Readers interested in economics and politics certainly won’t be disappointed.

I was honestly tempted to rate this at 4 stars because the printer wasn't the best... some spacing issues etc. But the quality of the information far outweighs the mild annoyance of a few print issues. This book is a calm and rational look at many of the key issues facing our country today. The authors do an outstanding job of backing up their claims with relevant statistics. No emotion, just facts. A must read for the modern libertarian. I hope to get a chance to read more books from these authors in the future.

After finishing the book...I kind of wanted to rate it 2 stars, then proceed to throw rocks at it. But, as we are of the same camp, I decided to wait a few days (I also visited your blog: "Being Classically Liberal"). So, after a few days (and several thoughtful Canadians) my response has been tempered. In part, my sour mood after reading the book was that there was nothing new presented that I didn't already know... several hours that I'll never get back (many readers will not have that problem). The other thing is, that it's fine to point out the ineffectiveness of many social programs, but the liberal (classical) approach to the same problem is never offered up. Gentlemen, you're preaching to the choir... the congregation needs to be shown the alternative. I may have to take on the task of writing that book myself. Note to self: footnotes at the end of the chapter or back of book, and enlist the services of a high school English student for editing.

Poor Formatting Not Enough to Invalidate Great Content

The only issue I had with this otherwise brilliant book was that the formatting was not very good, and there were quite a few typographical errors. Nevertheless, the content of the book was solid. Easily a 5-star.
