Editorial Reviews

Review

"The smartly paced story takes an occasional breather so that the travelers have a chance to check out their magnificent surroundings, including the gigantic public baths in Mohenjo Daro and a royal funeral in Harappa. Chandrayaan explains some of the region’s impressive administrative accomplishments to his princely student, injecting this fun story with a little educational content...In Defense of the Realm has all the drama and excitement of a Bollywood action film in graphic-novel form."

–Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD

"I highly recommend Campfire’s comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in  a way that excites kids about classic literature."

— Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

My 8yo and I both liked this book. It gets a bonus star from me because it's hard to find fiction set in the Indus River Valley Civilization. The book is just a story - there is no real evidence that Sargon tried to invade the Indus River Valley, though it *could* have happened - but it's interesting nonetheless. We didn't think the factual tidbits slowed the story down too much, unlike another reviewer.

As far as edutainment goes, this book is all education with no entertainment. I was bored within the first five pages of reading this book so I can't imagine any of the children it is aimed at being at all entertained by it. The author may be a skilled archaeologist but he leaves much to be desired as a storyteller. The narrative grinds to a halt every time the author delivers an educational factoid and all urgency in the protagonist's journey to gather allies to thwart an invading army is killed in the process. I'm reminded of the The Silmarillion, which is also less of a novel than it is a history book.

Reason for Reading: I enjoy ancient historical fiction and am a fan of this India-based publisher.

An epic historical tale told within the frame of an ancient (150BC) children's study class. The book starts off with a two page spread of text explaining that very little is known of the actual people who lived in the Indus Valley in ancient times, but that much *is* known about how they lived and their way of life. This story takes place in 2310BC in the Indus Valley with one real historically known person, Sargon, an Akkadian king. Sargon was a conqueror who sought to expand his lands and conquered much of the area at this time in history. This story supposes he tries to conquer the Indus Valley and by having the 5 small empires join together as one they are able to defeat his mighty army. But it is also the personal story of two people, Prince Meluha, heir to one kingdom and his betrothed, Princess Kundalini, heir to another kingdom. This is an exciting story which I read through in one sitting involving treason, treachery, loyalty, battles of might and battles of wit. Also, of course, a minor love story as the two main characters were betrothed as young teens and now meet again for the first time in five years. A very realistic portrayal of the times, good graphics, and an exciting story make for an exhilarating read.

I had no contact with this book as it was sent directly to nephew's inmate facility. However, he said it arrived quickly and in excellent condition. He is interested in all mythology volumes and excited to have this in his collection. Thank you!!
