“Defenseless from Elizabeth Dyer is my favorite romantic suspense debut of 2017. Fast-paced action, heart-pounding passion, and a cat that rides a Roomba! I love it when the tension in a book is tempered with humor, and this author delivers in spades. Georgia Bennett and Parker Livingston are meant for each other. She’s the type of woman you’d want to be friends with. And he’s ‘…lazy Sunday mornings after sex-against-the-wall Saturday nights.’ Love it!” —Dana Marton, New York Times bestselling author
“Sexy, suspenseful and downright hilarious in places. Defenseless had me gripped with the perfect balance of romance and intrigue. A tightly crafted plot combined with a beautifully told story as well as characters I was rooting for meant I couldn’t put it down.” —Louise Bay, USA Today bestselling author
About the Author
Elizabeth Dyer likes her heroines smart and snarky, and her heroes strong and sexy. An attorney and recent coffee devotee, Elizabeth spends the majority of her time tucked into a corner table at Starbucks or pinned beneath her (overly affectionate) bullmastiff. When she isn’t working or wrestling the dog, you can usually find Elizabeth writing the types of sexy, suspenseful books she most loves to read.
A born-and-bred Texan, Elizabeth resides in Dallas, where she indulges in Netflix marathons, Instagramming her dog, and brunch. Definitely brunch. Adorably awkward, Elizabeth hates the phone as much as she loves all the social-media things and hearing from her readers. Follow her on Twitter (@lizdyerwrites) or Instagram (@elizabethdyerwrites).

This book checked all the boxes in terms of delivering a kick ass female character, Georgia Bennett. Georgia works for Somerton Security where she was sent on a mission to guard a tech programming geek Parker Livingston. I will be honest, when I read the description of Parker, a nerdy, disheveled guy who couldn’t function without coffee zapping through his system, I really didn’t know how this author was going to make the story work. Well it did work. Parker may be messy while he was on a programming binge but let’s just say he cleaned up well. Parker was smart and hot with a sense of humor. Parker’s life was in danger because of programs he built to help the government. His programming skills landed him on a team of agents who specialize in covert operations. That’s how he met Georgia who arrives on his doorsteps ready to keep him safe and alive because his work had put his life in danger.
Literally, these two were immediately attracted to each other although initially they half heartedly fought it. I loved that Georgia was not a shrinking violet and that she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She was a strong woman with a rocky childhood and made bad choices in men until Parker came along. Parker was a sexy nerd who was no slouch in bed but he was also sensitive and caring. These two are involved and enmeshed in danger and intrigue trying to solve the mystery of who wanted Parker dead and why.
I was powerless to resist the sway of this book. The action was constant as I tried to solve the mysteries and answer the unanswered questions that clung like ivy throughout the story. Just when I thought I had it figured out, BOOM! More was revealed. The pace was relentless and the dialogue and storyline clever and sharp. The writing was crisp and flawless with side characters you hope will get their own story.
Even though Georgia and Parker’s love story comes to a satisfying conclusion, there is still more to be told and questions that still linger. I suspect Georgia and Parker will make appearances in other books in this series and I can’t wait to see what they have been up to. So excited to read the other books and for everyone to read this book.
The first thing I loved - Georgia. Fresh out of the military, trying to find a way to deal with the high society of Washington and the shallowness therein, an - let's say unfortunate - incident happens on her watch. Her boss, Ethan, who I am *dying* to get to know better, gives her an ultimatum. Do this next job well, make a human connection with the client, or find a new job. Georgia, remembering practicing "Do you want fries with that?" in front of the mirror that morning, is determined to make this job work. Parker is the new job, and wow, do Georgia and Parker make one heck of a connection!
Second thing I loved - PARKER! Oh...my gawd, did I love Parker. He's geeky and sweet and arrogant and unknowingly badass, and I loved him. He and Georgia have that instant spark that didn't feel like Why are these people attracted to each other? It felt like Oh, yes, this is exactly right. Parker is a genius, with anxiety and attention deficit issues, with an EQ to equal his IQ. He gets the dynamics of the team, his place, Georgia...he gets it. And he has no issues with letting Georgia take the lead when necessary. Not quite Alpha, not quite Beta. Parker is one of a kind.
Everything else I loved - the team dynamic, the pace of the story, the snark, the depth of emotion, the storyline. The dialogue is quick and smart. The writing is perfectly descriptive without giving you the whole kitchen sink. The characters were so well drawn, I felt like I knew them 2 sentences after they had been introduced. The reactions were human and real.
The .25% I didn't love - the ending wrapped up a little too quickly for me, and I felt like, because of some spoilery things I am not going to share, Georgia's inaction to a situation was a little off. That said, I am sure the spoilery thing will be addressed in the next book, as it appears to be an over-arching theme.
The one thing I don't love- This appears to be this author's first work,(which is kind of astonishing as it is THAT GOOD) and the next book in the series is not out until June, 2018. I have already pre-ordered. I really enjoyed Ms. Dyer's writing, and I wish there were more works out there by her to read while waiting anxiously for June!
So how much did I love this book? A lot. So much so that, even though I read it as part of the Kindle Unlimited program, I decided to go ahead and buy it. I believe in putting my money where my likes are. If you like snarky sheroes, geeky but can be Alpha when the situation calls for it heroes, a band of brothers, fast-paced action, rockin' sexy times, and a whole lot of good writing, you will love Defenseless.
Defenseless is a standalone, with an HFN/HEA. No cliffhanger, but there is an ongoing storyline that does not wrap up fully that does not involve the HEA.
The characters come to life and she had me personally invested in them from page 1. Georgia, strong outside with a soft center. Parker, super sexy, brilliantly smart, and yet so down to earth.
I'm not good a writing reviews but this book WOW'd me and I haven't been excited about a new series in a long, long time!

Something must have pulled at me, when I came across this book a full month before publication, I can't figure out what, but hey? Who cares!
Cos let me tell ya! I LOVED this book!!
I do so enjoy books that, for one reason or another, surprise me. I can't pinpoint exactly WHY I was surprised by this FIRST TIME AUTHOR book, but I really was! It was quite plainly, brilliant!
Georgia is, basically, hanging on to her job by the skin of her teeth, and her boss, Ethan, friendship with her dead brother. But there are only so many social events one can stomach! Parker, equally, is being punished by Ethan for not putting up with his security detail and for hacking into another government database. Then Parker's apartment is attacked and Georgia and Parker find themselves on the run for their lives. But not only their lives, the lives of almost every single military person sent on a covert ops. Someone is using Parker's program for vast personal gain.
Georgia and Parker have an instant and powerful attraction, right from the start, and to be fair, it isn't long before they act on that attraction. Its hot and heavy very early on and it continues all the way through the book. I loved the build up, the fight these to have for each other, against each other too. It's a very long time before either of them will admit how they feel. And I loved that, even though she felt how she did about Parker, she walked away to save him leaving her further down the line. But equally, loved that she overcame that fear!
Parker is a geek, he makes no bones about it, but he has special forces training, he just doesn't like to use that training. But here he HAS to, to keep himself, and more importantly, Georgia, alive. The overwhelming guilt he feels for the use of HIS program comes across amazingly well, I felt for Parker, cried for him too.
Georgia and Parker aside, some of the more technical issue of Parker's program went a little over my head, but I managed to pick the gist of it up. Someone was using Parker's program that was designed to risk asses covert/black ops for personal gain, and one of those ops lead to Georgia's brother, Will's death. And THAT is still not fully resolved. I think this might be the ongoing story line through however many books are going to be in this series.
It's extremely well written, from both Parker and Georgia's point of view, in the third person. I spotted not a single editing or spelling mistake. I was fully engaged through the whole book, which moves fast in some places, and then slows down so you can catch your breath before rushing off again!
I am, for a first book, blown away. Totally.
5 full and shiny stars!

The story is gripping right from the first chapter, the characters are extremely likable, and it's a good fast-paced read to keep the reader interested.
The relationships between Georgia, Ethan and Parker are interesting to watch unfold, also. And I really enjoy books that manage to mix romance in with another main story line - Plain romance gets a bit dull for me, but having a good romance plot mixed in with action like there are in this book is fantastic. And it's definitely the right mix of romance and action within this one for me!!
