I've been in/around the 'gun scene' for a long darn time...(decades) and something was always missing in my head with a lot of the training - it was a lot of training for training's sake (to me) and a lot of getting smaller groups, quicker times, or even training for some pretty crazy scenarios....whatever....they weren't bad...they just may not have been the best use of my time/money/resources. Now mind you...in some of the competition shooting venues...all that is really important!
The realities in this book - the first couple pages - line right up with what I have seen in having friends on the police force and unfortunately a couple horrible experiences by friends and even a (thankfully, mercifully) near-horrible event that happened to my family coming out of a place on a vacation. The fact is...it's not gonna be a gun fight - it's basically a (near) blind attack - and it's how you prepare for that, that's what really matters.
Many years ago, a friend was car-jacked. Having a gun doesn't prevent that...but the gun he carried without a round in the chamber...due to fear...and it was carried in a way that while he was in the car...it could not be presented without a lot of twisting, turning, untucking, etc.......and a lot was wrong.
That changed me. I quit going to 'training schools' and started reading Rob Pincus's stuff....Grant Cunninham is associated with him and ICE training. I started carrying in the manner I could present the fastest at all times - I started carrying 24/7 when my feet hit the floor and beside my bed each night. While driving, I started putting my gun in a holster attached to the center console - right below my hand - every time I got in my vehicle. For me it was all or nothing. If I wanted to say I was doing this to protect my family...how would I feel if I didn't? couldn't?
When we were on vacation....only the quick - literally less than a second - action I took to access my weapon (probably) prevented the attacker I saw coming just a second or two before he would have been on top of us. Presentation prevented something horrible I firmly believe. To this day, my family remembers that incident...and the whole process of the guy coming hard at us - to my action - to him veering away into another direction/doorway was less than 5 seconds. 5 seconds that my family still remembers from....8-9 years ago now? wow.
Anyway - ANY GUN CARRIER - wheel gun or semi-auto - should take a hard look at this book! It arrived on a rainy Friday and the weekend was rainy and bleak...gave me a perfect opportunity to read this book! It's dog-eared, it's underlined MANY places...and it's been in my possession less than 4 days. Possibly one of the best books I have ever read on being prepared for the unexpected I have ever read. The PLATFORM OF GUN you carry is FAR LESS IMPORTANT than preparing yourself to use it effectively.
If there is anything negative for me to come up with in regards to the book, it's that half way into it much of the information isn't solely revolver based and can apply to just about any firearm for the most part. So those expecting a book that's 100% devoted to revolver only techniques and information, will find that it just becomes a traditional, albeit, well written self defense book at some point during the readers experience. Personally, not a bad thing, especially for a new reader, so they're not tasked with buying multiple books. This book right here can replace three books of mine.
