"Defiance on Indian Creek transports readers to the days of the American Revolution to follow the heart-stirring story of young Mary Shirley, who struggles to find her place in a turbulent world. Troubled by whispers of her father's traitorous activities, the eldest of eight siblings, Mary must summon resolve and inner strength to do what must be done to keep her family safe--putting herself in the path of great danger. Readers will love Mary and worry for her every step of the way. Defiance on Indian Creek is the first book in what will no doubt prove to be as impacting and lasting a series as Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie books."--Charlene Whitman, author of The Front Range series
"A Wonderful YA Historical Novel. The setting is well researched, the characters are well developed, and the tension is superb. I thoroughly enjoyed this saga of a time in our American History. We feel the young girl Mary's struggle, we see the close knit family, and the hardships they go through. I look forward to the next book in this series! Well done!"--Patty Wiseman, author of the Velvet Shoe Collection.
From the Author
Later, I sat in a chair and read through them--shocked and amazed to discover that not only were they connected to my paternal grandmother's side, there was an intriguing story unfolding.
An internet search uncovered layers and layers of information, some factual, and some mistaken. As I learned of their fate, my long-dormant desire to be a writer became an obsession. Why had I never heard of this family? Theirs is a story of overcomers, heroes, and heroines! Mary Shirley developed the character qualities needed to survive her future. She was a tough, resilient, practical minded frontier woman, and I wanted others to know.
Through my Dangerous Loyalties Series, readers will follow the fictional account of young adult, Mary, as she and her family struggle to reach the Boonesborough settlement; adjust to life in an unprotected fort; flee for their lives; find love; and face what could be a tragic future.
Book I: Defiance on Indian Creek is Mary's fictional story. It's set in Western Virginia shortly before Mary's real life 13th birthday, on February 17, 1775. The Shirley family really did live on 527 acres of Indian Creek land. To learn more about their non-fictional lives, as well as links, and research notes, visit my website. I will update it from time to time. Feel free to leave comments and questions.
