Defiance is very different from the first book of the Blood Inheritance Trilogy. The first chapter started very strong and with a huge twist. It took me totally by surprise. I could immediately see so many different paths for the story, and because of what happened to Leisha, I thought she would have a strong desire for revenge. Instead, she only tells what happened to whoever she needs to tell and I didn’t see any feelings coming from her regarding the situation she went through. But later as other things come in place, I was able to understand that what happened loses importance in comparison with the the situation they are facing now.
With the loss of her power, Leisha finds hard to be human again. It’s even funny when she mentions how weird the food tastes and how easy some things are when you are a vampire.
Tafari appears on Leisha’s doorstep with Rinwa, and some big news. His staying leads them to reconciliation after hundreds of years separated. That’s when we see another twist , but despite of the change, the story becomes predictable.
Leisha is still a strong character, and I love her personality and determination. Definitely my favorite female character. Samantha is a different story, she confuses me because she is mature beyond her age for some matters and so immature for others. On the other hand, I love Nikita, he is my favorite male character so far and his personality becomes stronger in this book. I like that Tafari and Rinwa put their differences with Leisha aside to help each other and try to be a family. But at the same time, it bothers me that Tafari’s actions and resolutions concerning Leisha comes too easily, giving the impression that he seems to forget the reasons why he spent years apart from Leisha and not stop even for a second to evaluate his decision towards his relationship with her. I don’t want to say more and spoil the story.
Although this sequel seems rushed, the writing style is definitely better. The path that the story took became unique after a specific revelation. The fights are still well described and the characters don’t lack in personality. I have a lot of expectations for the last book. I have unanswered questions and I’m hoping to find the answers in the next book.
Overall 4 stars.
