I love the goal of Defiant Grace: to fill our heart tanks with 'the high-octane grace that takes our conscience by the scruff of the neck and breathes new life into us with a pardon so scandalous that we cannot help but be changed.' This is the kind of grace that makes disciples so love the Savior that they will give their lives for his glory. -- Bryan Chapell "President, Covenant Theological Seminary"
Dane Ortlund's Defiant Grace is a very helpful guide to a gospel-centered understanding of Christianity. Drawing from material gleaned from all four Gospels, Ortlund presents us with the compelling picture of 'defiant grace'--so different from the pale and timid imitation of pallid, anemic religion. Read this book and soak in the gospel of grace!' -- Dr. Josh Moody "Senior Pastor College Church in Wheaton, author of No Other Gospel"

'Dane Ortlund can at-out write. He is a craftsman of prose, and more: he writes with theological discernment and an eye for heart application. To read this book is to have a surprising encounter with the Saviour. Dane walks us through the four Gospels, highlighting Christ's astonishing words and actions -- actions never more astonishing than at Calvary. More than anything, as I read these pages I was reminded of the Saviour's stunning love for me and of his de ant grace -- grace that is shockingly unmeasured, vast and free.'--C J Mahaney
'The world wants justice and, truth to tell, the church often wants that too. In this book, Dane Ortlund makes the case from the Gospels that what the church and the world to whom she witnesses needs is grace. Grace is counterintuitive, beyond price and yet totally free. Left to ourselves, we hate it. We see it as demeaning. We regard it as witnessing to our moral corruption and weakness. Yet grace is God's way of salvation as revealed in the acts and sayings of Jesus in the four Gospels. This book is that strangest of things: the heartfelt rebuke which brings so much encouragement, freedom and joy. Well worth reading.'--Carl R Truman

Well written, comprehensive and 100% biblical. Only a hardened heart against the saving grace of Jesus would prevent this book from being effective. An open heart and mind seeking God's grace will find it here.
All the chapters were beneficial and unique, but his discussion of disobedient obedience was particularly appreciated. He shows how Jesus firmly dealt with the legalists, moralists, rule keepers, and Pharisees, suggesting that in their obedience, they were actually disobeying. As a recovering Pharisee, I had much to gain from this chapter.
I would recommend this book if you want to see afresh the amazing grace of Jesus Christ seen in the story of the four gospel accounts.
In the introduction, Dane says that his aim is to help us "cherish the gospel", and to "enjoy grace anew... the high-octane grace that takes our conscience by the scruff of the neck and breathes new life into us with a pardon so scandalous that we cannot help but be changed". His method? To walk us through the four accounts of Jesus life, showing how each, in its own way, unveils "scandalous" and "surprising" truths about who Jesus is, and about the nature of his message and mission.
Digging deeply into the biblical text itself, he also draws upon a wealth of scholarship from the past and present (from Athanasius and Augustine; to Calvin, Luther and Edwards; to Spurgeon, J. C. Ryle, Lloyd-Jones, C. S. Lewis; to modern commentators like D. A. Carson, and Kenneth Bailey). And the writing is superb too! C. J. Mahaney says it well in his endorsement - "Dane Ortlund can flat-out write. He is a craftsman of prose."
Most importantly though, page after page I was drawn to marvel at my Saviour. I have no doubt this will be one of those few books I return to again and again, to be reminded of, and revel in, the scandalous grace of the gospel. I give it my highest recommendation.
It is Good News with Great Joy and Gracious Power
that exposes the nefarious disease of sin and the cure

The author and Doctor of Doxological Dogma is
scholastically erudite yet fascinatingly simple
in his unpacking of Biblical truth.
I found myself trapped and torn apart as the gospel

'secret sin' beneath my sins.
I am so much more thankful for God's love in Jesus
and the fullness of teaching that God has given to us

and saints, and the fruit that may yet yield from a
And I do concur with Jared C. Wilson that the book
is saturated with some 'doxological whiskey' which
will result in delicious worship !
