Given that Curtis (aka Bernie Schwartz) endured an abusive childhood, it's not so surprising he turned out to be a conflicted, alcohol-guzzling, drug-abusing, four-times-married, disenchanted-with-Hollywood actor/painter/author/bon vivant. Many of his flicks were light fluff but he was always eminently watchable. Most of his flicks, however, couldn't compare to the life he led which began with an abusive mother and a hardscrabble Brooklyn existence and looped and twisted from there.
Considering his status as a major star, it's curious that only one biography has been written on Curtis. Perhaps he made it seem all too effortless. Curtis did pen two amusing autobiographies but Malone's book, a 2013 McFarland release, will probably serve as the definitive biography of this complicated man and his mania for fame, dames and family. Recommended.
