Recommended for those looking to kill some time with some short science fiction tales.
I do have 2 complaints however:
-The last story drags on too long. It starts out interesting but after a while I found my interest waning and by the end I had lost interest in the fate of the characters.
-The "libertarian" messages in the stories are pretty clumsy and heavy handed. I would have liked a more subtle libertarian influence as I felt at times I was being beaten over the head with the idea that big government is bad. I feel like those themes could have been handled with more tact.
Uh, well, they might not actually be from space. I just like to think so.
The appetite whetted, one yearns for the main course.
It has been a long while since I have come across a book of short science fiction that dropped me into so many different new worlds, introduced me to new characters I wanted to befriend, and embraced the strong spirit of independence found here. From a private eye/restitution agent to a corporate slaver, to a space running transport pilot who might just be a the sister in spirit of Captain Mal (Firefly), these characters will grab you and make you want to hear their stories.
The lead characters are women, but this never feels forced or contrived. These are simply great characters with interesting lives confronted with the power of the state actively trying to prevent the peaceful progress of their lives.
Perhaps the most telling aspect of these stories is that the last trip to the book store had me scouring the aisles looking for more from each of these authors.
My favorite of the bunch was the lead off story by Wendy McElroy, "The Slow Suicide of Living Again". An excellent story. And with the price of the collection currently free, getting Defiant, She Advances for this story alone is worth it. Definitely so.
The other story I very much enjoyed was the retro-future steampunk western "Get Kidd to Bounty" by Jack McDonald Burnett. Very much the time investment to read.
There is plenty of variety in this collection of sci-fi shorts, which are seasoned with a dollop of libertarianism. Something here for every sci-fi lover. A worthy addition to one's library.
