Wide appeal and treatment

This book is a unique blend of personal, political, military and social history. It is also a major contribution to understanding what, when, where, how and why we became who we are as a Nation. The authors choose to tell their story in terms of a generation. This is the generation of the “Baby Boomers” that caused upheaval in practically every nook and cranny of American life. In so doing they redefined the meaning of so many aspects of that life.
Since I was born in 1941, technically I might be considered a member of the so-called "Silent Generation" that preceded those who came along from post-World War II to 1964 or so. Yet, we too experienced so much of what transpired in the period in question. And Doug and Pam include many of the "Silent Generation" as exemplars of their thesis that “The Greatest Generation indeed saved our world (in World War II), but their children redefined it, making it better.”
If you experienced what was happening in our Nation in the aftermath of World War II through the ‘60s and early ‘70s, in whatever way your generation may be described, you will find this book of immense interest, . And if you seek some balanced introspection about your life and times, you will find it here.
Indeed, with balanced judgment, fairness and compassion for all, Pam and Doug use an historical appetizer in each dimension of change to acquaint the reader with some heretofore unrecognized material and perspective. This approach would satisfy anyone’s taste for background on scores of issues. But the real meat and potatoes of this book are the collection of stories about and by key figures and personalities that helped shape the zeitgeist of the times. They come from the worlds of sports, politics, the military and entertainment and plain ordinary life. They include well-known figures such as President Kennedy and Muhammad Ali, Hillary Clinton and General Colin Powell. They also are relatively unknown but important catalysts for change that you will be pleased and proud to meet.

An outstanding read that brings to life the baby boomer generation and the contributions they made to "defining" the world they live in. For baby boomers, this book will help them relive the past through historical facts, life-changing inspirational leaders, and personal stories from true heroes and people who made a difference. For millennials and others, this book offers an insight into the world their parents grew up in and the impact baby boomers made on building a better world for them to live in. Hopefully, it will help them to understand that the problems they are dealing with today were identified and defined by the older generation in a way that has brought the issues to life and allowed a culture and environment that allows for change that really does make a difference.

This book is great! There is a wealth of information and it is very easy to follow and really engaging. You can read the book straight through from start to finish or jump around to different sections. I definitely recommend reading each section, though. The book is filled with personal stories and quotes from the people it refers to making it quite interesting. This book is well worth your time and money.

The different battles fought were reconstructed in such a way that my admiration for our defenders left me not only speechless but ashamed at my lack of contribution. I am proud to be a Baby Boomer. Well Worth Reading

Despite some errors that were missed in the editing phase, I found this book to be quite good. It presents another side of the generation that lived through the Vietnam War era... from the perspective of one who served during the war... but did not confine itself to that. The stories of the soldiers, their friendships, and their post-military service to their communities and the world paint a truer picture of "our generation" than anything that journalists have put out. This one is well worth reading. Kudos, Mr. Sterner!

A book about the 1960s

Mr. Sterner looks at both sides of the Baby Boomer generation. He spent a lot of time with the draft dodgers and anti-war portion of the generation. I thought he would write more about those who served in the military. It is a broad view of the 1960s.
