Manufacturer Description
The Sanyo HD1000 Xacti digital media camera with 10x optical zoom is a high-definition compact digital media device that combines both the functionality of a digital camera and a digital camcorder. Different than a standard digital camera that shoots short video clips, the HD1000 offers advanced, next-generation video performance and high-quality stills in one small, lightweight camera. This powerful little device is designed to record both 1080i high-definition video and 4-megapixel digital still images, all of which are handily stored to a convenient SD or SDHC memory card.
Xacti HD1000 Highlights
CMOS Sensor Full 1080i HD sensor Incorporating the latest high-definition CMOS sensor, the Sanyo Xacti HD1000 camcorder captures full 1920x1080 (1080i) high-definition video at 60 frames-per-second. Designed to record the rich and vibrant colors of real life, the HD1000 also captures the subtle tones to provide the natural-looking result. The HD1000’s CMOS sensor provides the responsiveness needed to capture fast moving subjects and Sanyo’s noise reduction technology helps obtain the cleanest signal from each pixel. The HD1000 records to the latest in MPEG-4 standard MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, delivering exceptional video clarity and detail while maintaining the smallest file size possible.
10x optical HD lens At the front of the HD1000 is a commanding 10x all-glass HD lens. The HD1000’s fast f/1.8 lens is capable of allowing almost four times more light through to assist in lower light venues. Consisting of eight groups and eleven total lenses with a built-in neutral density filter, the HD1000's lens provides a fantastic field-of-view with a 38-380 mm range (35 mm equivalent). Combined with the 10x digital zoom, the HD1000 provides up to 100x total zooming capability.
Take 4-megapixel photos 4-megapixel still photos The Xacti HD1000 enables simultaneous shooting of 4-megapixel still images and HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) movie clips, with a simple press of the shutter button during the shooting of a movie clip. Users will never need to miss another precious photo opportunity. (Depending on the mode used to take still images, simultaneous video clip shooting may be interrupted. While shooting video clips, using the digital image stabilizer may change the angle of view for still images.)
Large 2.7-inch widescreen display The Xacti HD1000 features a large 2.7-inch widescreen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The display flips out from the camera and rotates up to 285 degrees on an axis that allows you to take great video or still images from otherwise-difficult-to-view positions, especially useful when shooting in large crowds or in small rooms.
Fits in the palm of your hand Ergonomic design The Xacti series has become known for the small size and ergonomic design. The HD1000 features a comfortable angle designed to easily fit in the palm of the hand. The HD1000’s design adapts a new 105-degree angle research proven to be less tiring to hold and shoot than typical camcorders. Easy-to-hold and easy-to-shoot, the HD1000 raises the bar in compact camcorder design.
HDMI high-definition output It’s easy to share your high-definition movies on your HD television with the HD1000. Using the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminal built into the base station, just one cable connects your camcorder to your TV for a totally digital output. HDMI carries both the video and audio signals in digital form for the highest quality playback.
Convenient SD/SDHC memory card The Sanyo Xacti HD1000 records high-definition and photos directly to a standard SD or SDHC Memory Card. In fact, the HD1000 is capable of recording up to 1 hour and 25 minutes of 1080i high-definition video on a single 8GB card (sold separately). The SD memory card’s compact size (0.94W x 1.26H x 0.08D inches) and weight (about 2 grams) makes it ideal for the compact size of the HD1000. The minimal power requirements of the SD card also contribute to longer recording and playback times. When connected to the computer via the USB cable, the HD1000 acts as a standard card reader. Transferring images and videos to your computer has never been easier.
Image stabilization High-definition can't hide shaky or erratic camera shaking. That's why Sanyo's HD1000 comes with a sophisticated image stabilizer for both stills and video. Using a proprietary Sanyo algorithm, the HD1000 compensates for distracting up-and-down or side-to-side camera movement during video shooting, keeping your subject steady and easy to follow. It accurately distinguishes between unintentional camera shake and deliberate camera movement. This handy feature operates in both wide-angle and telephoto modes, giving every shot a solid, professional-looking feel. Random access Each video is recorded as an individual MPEG-4 and each still as a JPEG so you can have true random access allowing you to review a specific image or video quickly and easily, without waiting for tape rewinding or fast forwarding.
Adjustable resolution modes Choose from six different video resolution modes and eight different still photo resolution levels depending on how your images will be used.
Digital stereo recording Robust sound recording Record 48 kHz, 16-bit, 2-channel sound for AAC-LC (MPEG-4 Audio) for a sense of reality to match the quality of those impressive high-definition movies. The Xacti HD1000 also features a dedicated terminal to which an external microphone can be attached.
Organization & in-camera editing With the Sanyo Xacti HD1000’s 9-image display function, users can quickly search for specific images or videos. And, with the slideshow feature, images can be played back continuously. The HD1000 can also edit clips. Clips can be cut in user-selected points and spliced, all from the camera itself. Unwanted images can be easily deleted, freeing up memory card capacity.
Easy connection to PC or TV Easy camera to PC connection One of the more frustrating aspects of working with any digital media camera is juggling all the wires and connections necessary when you want to use it with external components for viewing or to download files. Sanyo's HD1000 streamlines the whole process with an innovative docking station that provides an instant HDMI, component, composite or S-video connection to a TV and a USB connection for a PC. The HD1000 even recharges its internal battery when nested in the docking station.
Super-fast startup With the tapeless design, the HD1000 eliminates the need to queue up a tape deck or get a DVD or hard drive spinning allowing the HD1000 to begin shooting in as little as two seconds! When the HD1000 is powered on, closing the LCD display puts the HD1000 in standby mode. Simply open the display and the HD1000 automatically powers up and can begin immediately recording in as little as two seconds.
Manual controls The HD1000 features versatile manual controls for advanced shooting. The following settings can be manually adjusted according to the shooting situation: Manual focus adjustment (16 settings); aperture adjustment (6 stops); exposure compensation (1.8 EV, 0.3 EV steps); shutter speed (13 settings); and image-quality adjustment (for sharpness and color saturation).
Easy HD playback The Xacti HD1000 enables easy playback of recorded high-definition images directly on a TV screen. Connect the HD1000 to a VCR or DVD recorder to back-up copies of recorded content. Still images and video clips on the Xacti HD1000 are played back continuously and in chronological order. Along with MPEG-4 digital recording, the Xacti HD1000 offers convenient connection to a PC. With simple drag-and-drop operation, it's easy to save recorded video clips and still images onto a computer's hard disk for emailing, editing or archiving. The HD1000 also comes with a remote controller to operate the camera at a distance during playback.

The ease of use with our widescreen is key. We just pop the camera in it's charging base and can randomly access any video we have ever taken from the easy chair with the tiny remote provided. The trick (and only difficulty we had) was to purchase a "fat 32" format off-line drive, not to try to reformat one which was originally manufactured with a different std. A 500 gigabyte drive holds years of hi-def from this camera.
The video quality is superb outdoors. Better than cable hi def. Indoors at night we had some mediocre results at first, but this is not a problem now. The optional wide angle lense allows the autofocus to work more easily, and also makes it easy to hold the camera very steady. Without the wide angle lense, this camera has a rather long lense angle. Outdoors, however, the standard lense works out well. I usually leave the wide angle at home, and this way the camera still fits in my pocket. I'm a tall guy, but yes, it fits in my pocket just fine, and that matters. To improve the color and sensitivity for indoor use, I tweaked the many control options toward indoor/night use, and now leave it that way. The trick is the little switch for "simple mode"--in good light I simply switch to simple mode, where the camera works beautifully with plain vanilla full high def. Switching back to "normal mode" instantly resets about 10 internal settings to enhance low-light shots.
I really enjoy this camera, and recomend it to anyone who can deal with a few technicalities to then achieve amazing results in an easy, even lazy way.
It has a great 10X optical zoom (I turned off the digital zoom immediately).
I love the shape -- it's much easier for me to hold than my old mini-DV camera.
It is amazingly easy to use. The display is nice and big, which means obviously it's easy to see what you're shooting, and, also, that the menus are nice and large (good for my presbyopia). The menus themselves are startlingly easy, and I say this as somebody who's gone through video cameras starting in, hm, around 1990). I LOVE the dual-button, that is, the round "record" button is divided in half: push the left side, with a still camera icon, you take a still photo; push the right side, with a movie camera icon, you take a video. SO SO SO much easier than my digital still cameras, where, if you want to make a video you have to go into the menu to switch it to video (as I said, this is a TRUE hybrid camera).
And the still photos are just as good as those I've taken with any of my still photo digital cameras (I've had a Panasonic with 10x optical, the Kodak with the two lenses, and several others). Oh yes, I LOVE that in this tiny camera you get a 10X optical lens.
AND as for editing: there is a very nice, easy-to-use, basic editing function within the camera. With a little learning you can crop your videos inside the camera, without mucking around with a video editor.
OKAY now here are some negatives:
Editing with a video editor is very difficult, and there are a whole bunch of forums that I'm on now that are discussing this. Most people have trouble with this, because the format that this camera generates does not edit easily. So people are experimenting with various video editors, and if you're on a PC, Sony Vegas seems to be (I think) the only true video editing software than easily edits these files. BUT I still can't see the videos well in my preview window in Sony Vegas, because it seems that this type of mp4 file takes up a tremendous amount of space and processor power.
However (1) with some tinkering, people seem to be able to do some editing, and (2) you might not care about this, because you CAN do basic editing inside the camera. However, if you buy this camera, don't expect to be able to put your video into your computer very easily and start editing, as you might be used to with DV tape.
Now another negative might be that the image stabilization function isn't that great. However, I've only read that in other reviews. The truth is that I don't have a great basis for comparison, because (1) I'm just not as attuned as I might be to what is possible re: image stabilization in a camera like that, vs. what this camera offers. What I mean is: are there cameras that do what the HD1000 does with better image stabilization? and are they really as small, as compact, and as easy to use? I just don't know, and (2) I am not great at holding the camera steady (or any camera, not just this one), so maybe I would be needing more image stabilization than any little consumer camera like this would reasonably provide (?).
THEREFORE I haven't let these issues compromise my 5-star rating of this camera. One thing I find, reading reviews of cameras like this, is that people seem to expect almost professional-level equipment for their money, but I don't. For a camera I paid six hundred something dollars for, I am very very satisfied; more than satisfied. I've had a lot of cameras, and this is the first video camera that's light enough to throw in my bag and take with me EVERYWHERE (my JVC is small enough but is heavier), and I get FANTASTIC (consumer-level) videos and stills from one camera, and then I go home and stick the memory card in my laptop and voila, there are my pictures. And it's great!
(Oh I forgot to say -- about that --- if you select a format to shoot in that is SMALL, for example, forget about HD, forget about big files, and just, say set it on the tiniest, "web" resolution, you can shoot video and put it, for example, on You Tube or a blog or e-mail it or whatever immediately without any fuss whatsoever -- so that speaks to the flexibility of this camera -- there's a whole list (maybe 8, I can't remember) resolutions/formats that you can choose, for your purposes)
So -- highly recommended
I read a bunch of reviews and did other research online and ultimately purchased a Canon VIXIA HF100. The HF100 is an oustanding camera in terms of feature set and video quality. But I ended up returning the HF100 after about a week or so. I realized that I'm more of a point-n-shoot type consumer and while the HF100 was a great camera, given it's size (i.e. non-pocketable) I was less likely to actually carry it around and use it often.
So after some more research I bought the Xacti HD1000 and I've been very pleased thus far after a couple weeks. The video quality is very good, albeit not as good as the HF100, but I actually carry the HD1000 around and end up using it far more than I would have w/ the Canon. The HD1000 fits in my pants pocket (albeit a bit bulky) or comfortably in a jacket pocket.
The camera is easy to use generally and has a "simple" mode which makes it virtually idiot-proof. It takes still photos at up to 8MP, the specs say 4MP but you can set it to 8MP in the menus and the actual output files are 3264x2448 resolution. The 10x optical zoom is great though image stablization for video is mediocre (seems to work better for still shots). The F1.8 lens does a very respectible job capturing in low light situations. But optically the camera has a pretty narrow field of view even on the base zoom (1.0x) setting. I'd recommend the wide-angle adapter lens Sanyo sells if you plan to shoot a lot close up, though this makes the camera a bit more bulky.
So overall I'm very happy with the Xacti HD1000. Bottom line... if you want the absolute best video or feature set in the <$1000 class and you don't mind lugging your camera around in a case, check out the Canon and other models. If you want a very good camera, that's easy for the average consumer to use and you can actually fit in a pocket, I highly recommend the HD1000.
