A Great Book on Body Language For People Who Need Work With Communication Skills

Body language can be a hard thing to learn and employ, especially if you have aspergers like I do. Learning to communicate with peers using any kind of non verbal language was hard for me until I read this book. While I am still socially scared to talk with a lot of people I don't know, this book did provide insight into what certain gestures mean and what I could be portraying to people without even knowing it.

Good Resource for Writers

Whether a reader considers this a five-star book or a one-star book depends largely on what your particular needs are. This was a book written for salesmen, with the objective of teaching them how to read people and how to present themselves in order to close a sale. It is not a textbook, so if you're looking for the latest in scientific research, this book isn't it.

I'm a writer. In an attempt to add more than nodding, smiling, frowning, etc. to my fiction, I needed a book that described more subtle expressions and gestures. I'm about half-way through this book (I read resource books like this a few pages a day over a period of months) and it is exactly what I needed. The tone is light, not bogged down in academic-style prose, and has already given me several insights and models for character behavior. I consider it a good addition to my reference shelf.

I have praised this book to my students and anyone interested in body language from the first moment that I read it. It is one of the most comprehensive books on body language that I have ever read. I love that it talks both about body language that is similar across cultures as well as body language, specifically, gestures, that are or can be different from one culture to another.

There are many pictures/photographs used throughout this book depicting universal body language signals.

This book also has an interesting section on seating arrangements/office set-ups, the signals these arrangements can send and then gives specifics on how to arrange seating according to the type of meeting one wishes to hold.

I teach communication courses and this book is always one of the books I put on the recommended reading list.

If you want an excellent resource book on body language then this book is well-worth reading.

Shortly after learning I have Aspergers, I realized my social skills needed work, so I began reading this and similar books. It's easy to read, but I found myself taking ample time with each page due to how substantial every section is. Even the passages on hands, which I never thought of as too socially important, proved to me how essential handshakes and explanatory gestures can be in interpersonal communication.

This is a must have for anyone interested in social psychology, and an excellent source of info for anyone with social awkwardness.

Both Informative and Entertaining

I decided to read this book for my own amusements. I had trouble deciding between this book and "What Every BODY is Saying" by Joe Navarro. With the proliferation of paid reviewers nowadays, I decided not to trust the Amazon reviews and instead take a look at each book's table of contents to see which interested me more (I suggest you do the same). Navarro's book seemed more strictly focused on body language signals and interpretations, while "The Definitive Book" seemed to delve into the same things and also how they apply in real world situations (interviews, courtships, etc.).
I believe other reviewers have mentioned that the authors of "The Definitive Book" do not cite their sources or mix in opinions with research so that it's hard to tell the difference. Example: "Simply put, the more he can make her laugh, the more attractive she will find him. This is because the ability to make others laugh is perceived as a dominant trait and women prefer dominant males, while males prefer subordinate females." No research or studies were cited and it sounds like an opinion to me, but since I'm not writing a paper on this I don't really care either way. It should be noted that the authors did cite specific researchers and experiments with most of the information they presented.
The authors did occasionally tell jokes that didn't really seem to make the point they intended to. However, they were still funny so I was not bothered by them.
The book covers a wide range of topics from how to tell if someone is lying to how to behave in interviews and business situations. I learned a lot from this book and have begun to paying attention to other's body language to try to hone my body language reading skills.
Overall, this was both an entertaining and informative book. I highly recommend it.

An excellent guide to human body language and decoding what others are thinking based on their posture, position and gestures. It also offers advice on how to communicate better through appropriate body language and how to convey information (or lie) more easily.

The book is spiced with witty jokes, cartoons and anecdotes that make it an easy and enjoyable read. The language used is simple to understand and information contained in it is easy to learn.

I only wished that the authors were not as pretentious with their introduction. They say that this book will "revolutionize the way we deal with others" and "change our life forever". Oh please. I did read it and I did use the information in it for good effect, but it did not revolutionize the way I deal with others and it did not change my life forever. I realize that they want to sell the book, but making grandiose statements on how your life will never be the same after reading it, might put some people off.

The only other complaint I have is that the book seems to focus mostly on business/office relationships and dating. While humans do spend a lot of time working and pursuing romantic relationships, it is not the only thing we do. How about some advice about how to behave in a restaurant with friends or in a store when negotiating with a salesman?

The complaints are minor, however. The book is excellent and should be read by anyone interested in reading/interacting with/manipulating others. I started using some of the tricks in the book and they work.
