INCREDIBLE MASTERS!

I'm 43 at the time of this writing and I grew up listening to records. I have no doubt that vinyl sounds better than CD/digital, but not in every case. If the record companies who are now, and have been re-issuing back catalogs of popular bands take the time to do it right, we the fans end up with incredible product. However some bands are satisfied allowing their music to be released in an appalling way. The Judas Priest remasters are an example. What they call remastered, to them simply means compress the heck out of the music, so when in wav form there are no peaks and valleys, just an ugly block. All this does is make the music louder, and ruins the dynamic range of the original recordings. In such a case, I prefer listening to vinyl, even a less than perfect copy!

The reason for remastering in the first place is because music recorded in the pre-CD era was transferred to digital in the 90's with awful results. Listen to the first CD press of such bands as Black Sabbath, Rush, Kiss, Pink Floyd, even the holy Beatles! The music sounded far away, almost as if someone had made you a cassette recording of the music off of the masters, minus the hiss. So now we have some bands putting out wonderful remasters which use as little compression as possible and achieving results in sonic performance that match, and in some cases exceed the sound of the original vinyls.

LED ZEPPELIN has achieved this with this box set! I have not done an A/B comparison to the older "Complete Studio Recordings" box set, mastered by Jimmy Page himself, so I will not comment on any improvements that may or may not exist between the 2, but I will say that these new masters sound brilliant! The music actually fills my room, which is something that vinyl has always done, and where digital format music falls short. Yes digital is crystal clear and bright, but to my ears it always lacked DEPTH! The music in this set has that wonderful depth that my vinyl provided me. It is warm and rich and up front. Every nuance is heard. I am completely satisfied with this release in terms of sonic performance.

Very happy with the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection

I am not a Led Zeppelin completeist like many others may be. Not owning a lot of their stuff I picked up the 1990 4 disk box set and the accompanying left-over two disk set from 1993 about ten years ago or more. After listening to it, I thought it sounded "muddy" for a "remastered" product. Anyway, I had been aware of the Definitive Collection Mini LP box set that featured the band's albums in mini-LP replicas for several years. The box set intrigued me and I bought a used copy in pristine condition for a pretty reasonable price that was not a fake. Mine is not the SHM version so I cannot speak to that (although the reading I have done on-line indicates there are very mixed reviews as to whether the SHMs are truly sonically superior to non-SHM cds). However, the Definitive Collection box set that I received definitely sounds more clear, detailed, crisp on my high end stereo system than the 1990 box set. Very happy with this purchase.

I have been a casual Zep fan, knew the hits, etc.. I had Mothership, which was fine, but I rarely listened to it. I've been looking for something new to get into and decided to get this box instead of just buying single albums. The sound is excellent and I've been taking in each album as a whole as opposed to just skipping around. I knew they were blues based but I really didn't know by how much. For example, I love "you shook me" on the first album, great 12 bar blues. Also, I love the packaging, mini replicas are cool. I didn't care for the plastic sleeve that the albums were in. A number of them tore as I was trying to get them open. The plastic in the Beatles Mono set was much easier to open, etc....So, I would highly recommend this set to anyone getting into Zeppelin, the music speaks for itself, and the sound is excellent (to my ears).

I just got this box set recently and I'm really pleased with it. When I was a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's, there were only 2 bands that I owned every single vinyl LP of, they were Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I had sold off all my vinyl albums many, many years ago, so it brought back a lot of good memories to see these Zeppelin cd's packaged exactly the way I remember them (although in smaller form). And since I also own "Oh By the Way" by Pink Floyd (which also has their entire catalogue in "mini-LP" form), I'm content with life.

It appears the CD's here are the same as the Japanese imports, as they still have the Japanese characters printed on the wrapping of the cd's.

If I had to list any negatives, I'd say there's a bit of overkill with the 5 extra "In Through the Out Door" covers and the extra "Led Zeppelin I" cover. Okay, so instead of orange ink, they used blue ink. I didn't really need it. It would have been nice if they had included "How the West Was Won" and "BBC Sessions" instead of those empty CD holders. Then you'd really have the complete LZ.

The music, of course, is awesome. Led Zeppelin really doesn't have a weak track in their entire catalogue. It's well worth the $150. At most other other stores, this box runs around $200+. You also get the new version of "The Song Remains the Same" and an extended "Coda", so that's a bonus too.

Poor! I bought this back in 2012 and the seller said it was a an import from China, little did I know at the time was it's a complete fake! The photos represent the real Japanese replicas, look carefully in main picture Led Zeppelin 3 has a small black boarder around the outside of the cover, mine it turns out doesn't. Had no idea I was buying a fake which is basically cdr copies of each album in some badly reproduced / printed covers and badly printed CDs.
Definitely won't be SHM-CD as advertised. Wish I had the information back when I purchased that I have now as I would have definitely sought a refund badly advertised in my opinion. Other things to look out for are no cut outs on physical Graffiti windows and no wheel on zep 3.
Disgusting how people can get away with ripping people off for something that is worthless. I already had everything by Led Zeppelin including the old boxset with the Zeppelin on box with cornfields but just thought this would be a good purchase at the time having all the mini lp replicas in a boxset. Be careful with sellers maybe ask questions before making a purchase is all I'd recommend.

Ok, I have written reviews for each album individually. Now, I shall comment on this set, which contains the albums that I own.

Basically, this set is exactly as it says on the tin: the Definitive Collection; you get all of Led Zeppelin's studio albums in one handy package! You also receive 'The Song Remains The Same' soundtrack (live) album, with bonus tracks!

Now, in terms of presentation, this set is superior to any I've seen before. Each album is presented in its original Vinyl form, albeit replicated, but I, for one, can live with that. For example, on 'Led Zeppelin III', you get the revolving wheel on the front sleeve of the album, which came on the original Vinyl album way back when. The same goes for 'Physical Graffiti'; you get the inserts and the two slips for both discs... depending on how you insert either the inserts or indeed the slips, it will reflect how the album sleeve looks, hence the title 'Physical Graffiti'.

Now, onto the sound, these albums all sound fantastic!!!!!!! I noticed one reviewer felt that these albums showcased the 'Loudness War' in all its glory, please ignore that review because it is a lie!

So, all things considered, purchase this incredible set if you want all of Zeppelin's albums in one superior place. You'll be glad you did, guaranteed!

Took a risk on buying this as I've read that some have been sent the fake version. I was not disapointed. Album sleeves all correct, LZ3 has the rotating wheel, Booklet with TSRTS, Sticker with Presence, all inners with PG, HOH, 4, Prescence, ITTOD and Coda.
Turquoise lettered LZ1 cover and also the Orange print sleeve is included along with the 5 sleeves for ITTOD. CD'S sound great and the box doesn't take up too much shelf space. You get the extended versions of TSRTS and Coda.
Whole package is top quality, infact the sleeves are some of the finnest quality CD sleeves that i have seen and are absolute faithfull replicas of the original Vinyl sleeves (Down to texture and paper/plastic inner sleeves). If your a Zep fan then I don't have to give details on the music as we all know it's awesome. Highlights for me though are, Your time is gonna come, Goodtimes, Badtimes, What is and what should never be, Heartbreaker, Immigrant song, Tangerine, Freinds, Rock and roll, When the Levee breaks, Misty mountain hop, No Quater, Over the hills and far away, Achillies last stand, For Your Life, Black country woman, Trampled under foot, In the light, Sick again, Dazed and confused (live), Celebration day (live), Whole lotta love (live), In the evening, All of my love, Southbound saurez. Where gonna groove, wearing and tearing, Travelling riverside blues and even Carouselambra (John Paul Jonses Keyboard driven 10 min+ monster). If you have the cash, Risk it, you can always return it if it isn't the correct and genuine item). 10/10 for everything. Made up.

Oh the pleasure of handling this box. The packaging is all you would want; heavy sleaves, textured and layered as the originals. The spinning circle on 111 is all very well, but to reproduce the water sensitive inner for the Outdoor album along with all the versions of the sleeve and a brown wrapper is amazing. Add the original, non-orange, alternate sleeve, for volume one and every trainspotter detail. The only box (prior to The Beatles mono) to totally get it.
