From the Manufacturer
The ProMonitor 1000 is Definitive's largest and best satellite speaker in the acclaimed Pro Series. Four ProMonitor 1000s along with a ProCenter 2000 and ProSub 1000 makes a complete ProCinema 1000 system. All the components of the system are packed and sold separately allowing you to mix and match Pro Series components to build the system that best suits your needs.
Don't let the ProMonitor 1000's small size and affordable price fool you -- it is a remarkably sophisticated product with huge sound. The 1000 incorporates many of the same technologies as Definitive's top-of-the-line models including BDSS drivers, pure aluminum dome tweeters, and planar pressure coupled mid/bass radiators for home theater sound quality that will shock your friends and family when they hear your system for the first time.
The Secret to Their Big Sound
Competing satellite speakers of this size usually have weak lower-midrange response; that part of the audio range that contains the "warmth" and "body" of voices and musical instruments. Listen to a male vocal on typical small satellite speakers and you will instantly hear the weakness in the lower midrange. The ProMonitor satellites avoid this critical problem by pressure-coupling exclusive BDSS technology driver to an equal-sized mid/bass radiator cleverly placed on the top of the satellite. This technique doubles the lower-midrange radiating area of the speaker without increasing the size of the enclosure. You’ll enjoy the kind of rich, warm and life-like sound quality that you thought was only possible with big, hard to place speakers.
Easy to Place, Easy to Use
Small enough to disappear in a room but beautiful when in plain view, the 1000 satellites can be shelf-mounted with their unique tri-lobed base, wall-mounted using the built-in keyhole mount, or mounted using optional ProMount 90 articulating pivot wall mounts (sold separately).
Sonically, the ProMonitor 1000 satellite is a revelation in terms of achieving incredible sound at an affordable price. Their imaging is absolutely boxless, spacious and three dimensional while delivering pinpoint specificity and localization when called for. They are velvety smooth with you-are-there presence which is hard to find at any price and unheard of in this price range. The 1000 is dynamic but capable of great subtlety so it excels equally with music or movies.

Pretty much these are for the nicest home theater I'll ever buy and the last one I'll buy until we get into holographic TV or whatever comes after that so for me this was it.
Basically I would be an audiophile if I could afford to be one, but I can't so this is the closest I'm going to come.
I got these from ABT electronics in Chicago, but wanted to write the review here on Amazon as well as there because when you're online you can't hear how they compare.
I compared them to every other speaker system in the 800-2000 price range for a 7.1 channel system, not including the tuner and nothing else they had there sounded as good as these.
First off, these are incredibly vivid and lifelike. What is amazing about them is that they are able to give you the subtle sounds and dialogue clearly and distinctly without having to turn it up to a point where sound effects etc get so loud that it's unwatchable.
This is my annoying history with surround sound systems. They are either too loud, and drowning out the dialogue or else you have to turn it down and then you can't hear what people are saying or pick up on the "surround" part of the surround sound.
Granted, you can compensate for these things to a point with messing around with changing the individual channel volumes and what not, but ultimately you're constrained by the quality of the speakers.Read more ›
Much smaller and sleeker than most others.
Much cheaper than floorstanding, but still almost-comparable sound quality.
Available floor stands that match, fit solidly, and look good.
...and best of all, they'll make great surround speakers when I decide to upgrade l/r speakers!! (they're wall-mountable, too!)
B&W 686... I really really really liked the sound on these (actually just a notch above the ProMonitor1000s) - but they were more expensive and not as stylish (the box-design has been done before).
Martin Logan Motion 4... surprisingly good sound (especially a huge step up from the slightly-cheaper Motion 2s) but it just sounded more harsh to my ears. Maybe these are better for movies, and not music. You'd be happy with them if you hadn't heard the DefTech's or B&Ws!
bonus tip: keep your eye out for 10% off single-item coupon at Best Buy or Magnolia, and use that to buy these! That's what I did!
My intended use was as main speakers powered by a mid-level HK receiver to fill a large great room (living room, dining room, kitchen). They do a pretty good job for music, but dialog on movies seems to be muted and not as crisp as the rest of the sound effects/soundtrack. A center channel is the next addition.
As a personal listening note, I prefer a sound with very crisp highs. Although rated up to 30 kHz, these don't hit the highs quite as much as the Infinity Emit tweeters, which are also rated up to 30 kHz. The Matrix scene where the side of the building that is made of mirrored glass breaks is my litmus test for tweeters.
The 1000s have a passive low frequency radiator, which is not bad for music, but won't add any punch to sound effects or a heavy bass line. Adding an Infinity 8" sub prodcued almost too much bass. The sub out on the receiver is dialed down and the crossover set to 80 Hz.
Speakers are such a matter of personal taste that it's hard to recommend, but all in all, these were my favorites in their class as they had the most natural sound.
I consider myself somewhat of an audiophile that no longer has a budget or space. I looked around on the internet at various small bookshelf models from Yamaha, Infinity, JBL, etc. I will say I took a leap of faith and bought these sound unheard...They sound great. Realistically, they are what they are. You're not going to get huge sound from them. I did notice that the are rated at a higher SPL (91) than most speakers and you can tell. The sound is quality though. Bass response isn't outstanding, but baritone to soprano vocals are full and clear.
Seeing as I'm a cheapskate, I didn't want to pay full price. I noticed that Amazon Warehouse had some at a reduced rate. The site stated that they were in "very good" condition with some "cosmetic blemishes." I used super saver shipping - they shipped within 4 days and they have no blemishes on them! They are very attractive speakers - the wife unit is very pleased.
If you're looking for a small bookshelf with good sound and great looks, I think these are it.
