Elias Shelton, the Duke of Winsdale, has a duty to produce an heir. Completely indifferent, he leaves his mother to invite all the most suitable candidates to a house party at Winsdale Park, promising to choose one of them as his duchess. Returning home after several days of pre-nuptial carousing, Eli falls from his horse and badly injures his head. His life is saved by a mysterious woman who fascinates and enthrals Eli.
Athena Defoe and her young twin sisters are hiding from their past in a tumbledown cottage on Eli’s estate. Athena refuses to place her trust in Eli, but he is equally determined to repay her by protecting her. To do so he must first discover what or whom she is so afraid of. With attention focused on her by the duke’s interest, Athena’s whereabouts becomes known and danger visits her quiet corner of Hampshire.
Caught up in the whirl of his mother’s entertainments, Eli must race against time to save the woman he’s fallen in love with, even if she isn’t duchess material…

About the author

I’m a British author, brought up on the Isle of Wight and share my life with a handsome rescued Spanish Podenco called Markos.
I’ve had over one hundred books published, ranging from Regency romance, (my first love), to contemporary women’s fiction and marine crime mysteries.
When not writing I walk miles, make half-hearted attempts to retain flexibility by attending yoga classes, read other people’s tomes…oh, and I’m on a one woman mission to keep the wine trade profitable!

+++Spoilers+++
The h is beautiful, a skilled lace maker, a healer etc etc. It's all quite a lot to handle. She also doesn't share her secrets with the Duke, who could obviously help her and I found it a bit irritating. The H proposes to make the h his mistress and this young, virtuous woman readily accepts!! I hate this plot device so much. It spoils a book for me. I truly found it ridiculous that she'd give up her innocence in a heartbeat after turning down other suitors for years. On the up side the Duke always confessed to loving her but says he can't marry her (because she isn't good enough).
Not a bad story and not bad writing.

The story is a rerun of Cinderella, only the sisters are nicer, and it has about as much basis in reality.
