Defying Gravity: Jordan's Story: Jordan's Story Hardcover – October 6, 2022

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 392 ratings

The image of Jordan with her white shards of beehive and Mondrian make-up is one of the most iconic in pop culture. From the counter of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s taboo-busting shop on 240 King’s Road, she helped shape a revolution. But who was the woman behind it all? How did a ballet-mad girl from Sussex make her way, via the clandestine gay clubs of Brighton and London, to the eye of punk’s storm? What happened after she shared so many hair-raising adventures with the Sex Pistols, Adam and his Ants, Derek Jarman and Andy Warhol – and then just disappeared? With commentary from key players and close friends including Vivienne Westwood, Paul Cook, Marco Pirroni, Holly Johnson, and her partner behind the SEX counter, Michael Collins – plus a wealth of never-before-seen images – Jordan reveals her outrageous life story. Buckle up for a masterclass in true punk spirit.

Jordan for all intents and purposes is ground zero for punk rock. If it weren’t for her and her brave and forward thinking sartorial choices, the attitude that punk rests it’s revolution on would never have been strong enough to take hold. Fashion is a representation of who you are inside. And who Jordan Mooney was inside is a true original. Fearless, in fashion and in life, attitude expressed through style and the hard work required to not only influence an entire movements attitude and style, but also to care for and sell the fashions that gave the verve necessary for punk rock mentality to take hold. It wouldn’t have worked if it had no visual offensive that really riled everyone up. The visual was more important than the music. They went hand in hand but only the clothes gave the confidence to kick the system in the teeth. This book is brilliant because Jordan pays such great attention to details of FASHION no matter what anyone in the book is wearing. The outside forms the inside and the outside is rubber, fetish wear, spikes, museum worthy paintings in make up, rips and mohair all informed by rock n roll and as we know, all rock n roll is homosexual. Swastikas show the gangs contempt for their parents way of thinking and serve to jump
Start many an argument in the book. See thru plastic outfits and balls of steel in lesbian underground clubs and art films like Derek jarmans jubilee. Of course Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm
mclaren are there in all their rabble rousing genius and energy but there are also countless others that Jordan knew through the years getting to have their say of how they saw specific events making the book feel even more definitive and warm at the same time. Funny gossip and deathly serious conversations, middle fingers and twin sets and pearls. It’s all in this book. The most thorough and revelatory book I’ve read on the explosion that was punk rock in the Uk. The Sex Pistols. So much was happening around them and of course they were there own brilliant piece of the chaos but Jordan, it never would have lasted if it weren’t for her. Her voice is measured, never self important but also never diminishing what she and other people brought to this scene that would end up not just changing music and fashion, but also the world to come. RIP Jordan Mooney. They don’t make icons like her anymore. If you care anything about punk rock, THIS is the only book you need. Truth is a slippery thing but Jordan nails it. Fashion rules. And it is the misfits who stand strong who will shape tomorrow.

I wasn't sure what I'd get from this book but I left with a profound sense of this woman's courage to be herself but also to shock using her fashion experiments and the clothes designed by her employer the great Vivienne Westwood. I think that in a world of such frightening environmental destruction and increasing rifts between left and right, rich and poor, it is time to learn this woman's lessons again. I am an old geezer who decided after reading her book to make a punk fashion statement of my own in relatively conservative (not politically but culturally) Chicago by sewing a statement into the back of an old stained white shirt denouncing the way we treat the environment, given I see here too many people buying giant cars and living on the internet at a time when we need to cut back on energy use. That means the book was a success!!!!

I'm a collector of biographies, and ardent fan and student of the London 70s and 80s Fashion and Music scenes. I've read countless biographies from the influencers of the time. I've seen Jordan in every book and documentary of the time and always wondering what this woman was like.

She does not disappoint, with this open and honest look into her life and the times. It is full of surprising and interesting stories and connections, is well written and held my full attention. I'm thrilled that she finally told her story. This is a must-read for people who are interested with that ground-breaking time of the early UK Punk scene, from one of the only people with the insider knowledge who could share it. I found the book so interesting in fact, that when I finished it, I did more research on Jordan and watched some great YouTube interviews of her speaking and talking about the times. This book is highly recommended!

Love the mythology of Jordan, the pistols, Westwood etc. Jordan was right in the center of it all - her image was an inspiration and a catalyst for others. The book itself needed an editor ( was there one?) - as it was a bit of a mess, but again I find the content compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterclass in Punk
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2019
I really enjoyed reading this fascinating book. It’s well written and full of intriguing and interesting stories. It captures perfectly those heady days and it’s so great to read about all the behind the scenes stuff featuring iconic figures. I was lucky enough to get caught up in the punk scene and it brought back some great memories. Jordan comes across as such an amazing and inspirational person and her ability to turn things round when darkness threatened to engulf her is awesome. The photos really add and I also love the way the book is set out. Its a masterclass in Punk and five stars all the way

Such a fantastic, engrossing book. Jordan tells her story so brilliantly that you can imagine being there and sharing the amazing experiences she describes. The perspective from her family and friends is also a great addition to her story. I have been hoping Jordan would tell her story and I absolutely loved it. Just fabulous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jordan (a letter too)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2020
Having been on the periphery of the scene, I've read a lot of books on punk and met many of the protagonists. Nonetheless, this book held me like a pair of Seditionaries overpriced bondage strides. It's forthright and well written to a point where I'd say it was essential reading for anyone interested in this often misunderstood genre. This is an object lesson in such an autobiography, which if they were available I'd give even more stars to.
