Suction power @ 1200 pA is very strong compared to many others, except perhaps high end Roomba or Dyson which cost a lot more and are also likely a lot louder. BTW the suction rating may be difficult to find on most other models, but it is a key feature to focus on if you have considerable dog hair, foot traffic dirt, etc to pick up
Loudness: I absolutely hate loud vacuum sound and must leave the house when wife vacuumed with our regular upright or pull along vac. With this DEIK, it is barely noticeable sound level after some minutes and no need now for using our other vacuums. I measure it at ~ 55 DB which is fine, whereas our regular home vac's put out 75+ DB.
Side sweeping brushes (2) + 1 center located rolling brush and vacuum port design works great. The side brushes feed anything to the center brushes which gobbles up all to the suction port and delivers to the dust bin. Also the center rolling brush does a good job on low pile carpets. If you compare to other brands, make sure you have at least these 2 front/side sweep brushes and the one center brush with vacuum port if you want the most suction and cleaning action.
Dust bin is .90 liter (not .65 liter as spec says on Amazon listing). Our home is 90% wood floor with some area rugs and we fill the .90 L tank every time we have the DEIK do a full house clean. (disclosure: We do have a Labrador & a Great Dane with a combination of long fluffy & short, thin hairs that they produce a considerable amount of, in addition to tracking in some dust on their paws every day.) Any smaller size dust tank and you will likely need to clean it multiple times per run. Hard to imagine a .3ml tank being adequate as many of the competitors have.
The water tank is .65 L which is fine for our house size. I suggest pre-wetting the mop cloth first as it takes 5 - 10 minutes before the seeping water will dampen the mop cloth enough to do it's job. It is a reasonable once a week mop job for us, but the wife will still do a traditional mopping every 2 weeks, so it saves that big mopping job for every other week now.
Size is perfect IMHO. Not very thin at 3.4" h (thinner will limit tank size and suction power imho), nor too wide at 13.8" diameter to get under or through most spots. You will soon get used to where it can get hung up or cannot get under or through furniture and adopt the house to allow it to be most effective. We use 'her' every 2 - 3 days and she gets 95% of our floor surface area very well done, occasionally moving furniture to get some of the not regularly achievable spots.
Travel logistics: More than adequate choices, we use the 'automatic, full power go anywhere she likes' roaming mode most of the time, occasionally using manual direction arrows and/or closing bedroom / bathroom doors to focus on other areas. She travels wherever she likes, eventually getting to most every nook & cranny in our home within the 1.1 ~ 1.25 hours that she normally runs. There's the other edges only, out & back jog and focus on one spot modes that we rarely use. Don't need to use them as the automatic roaming works great. Occasionally she needs a manual transport back to the power port for recharge, but mostly finds the way on her own.
Travel reliability: Very good. The super wide "off-road" wheels do very well on our hardwood, bathroom tile & low height area rugs, easily climbing the ~ 3/8" max height and even the bathroom rubber backed carpet mats are not a problem. I'd be very suspicious of any competitors models with a smooth or less wide tire design. You don't want to keep assisting a slipping unit that gets hung up on certain spots all the time.
Battery: Lithium 2600 mah is good. We get about 75 to 80 minutes of full power roaming before she beeps and heads back to her power port. Full recharge time is ~ 3 hours. She then backs off the port when done. Take note that her power is on when in the charger, so after her refill, she will back off the power a couple inches and remains 'on' unless you manually power click her off so she can sit there unnoticed and presumably drains some battery juice while off the charger, but still in the 'on' mode. I will often give her another go at the charger before use, which usually lasts 15 - 20 minutes after sitting in the 'on' mode for a couple days, so there apparently is some battery drain while not in use. From our usage rate a lithium battery is mandatory as a NIC-MH type will likely not last near as long. This unit has a user replaceable battery (at least it's detailed in the manual as such), so you won't have to send it in when battery replacement time comes (* although check the next item on replacement parts).
Replacement parts: which should consist of front/side brushes, middle roller brush, hepa and 3D filters and the battery are currently a 'take it on faith' pro that DEIK will get them on Amazon sometime soon at a reasonable cost. This can easily be a big negative if they do not do so, but their responsiveness from email ( email@example.com ) is rapid and friendly, so I imagine they will find a way to direct ship any part you need, even if it's not listed on Amazon. This remains to be seen, but I believe they will not tank their U.S. business by allowing complaints on parts to undermine such a great product and their other vac's that they manufacture as well.
Customer service: I've emailed a couple times ( firstname.lastname@example.org ) with questions and they were very responsive and even reached out to registered my unit. Their responses to Amazon critiques shows great promise as well. No phone # in the U.S. to call though, so it's hopeful they will come up with that soon or at least maintain very good email responsiveness.
Filters: HEPA & additional Fan Fold (so called "3D") filters work very well. Our house is noticeably cleaner feeling and perhaps this is due to less dust in the air.
Automatically adjusting suction strength: The feature of automatically adjusting suction strength to carpeted/tile/hardwood/laminate floor, I guess does what it's supposed to. She doesn't get hung up on our low/medium pile carpet from suction and actually does a very good job of getting dog hair from the carpet. Unfortunately we'll need to buy a different color area rug that has no black stripe colors in it to see if it's capable of fully cleaning the whole rug, but she does a good job on the area she can get to.
Price: Very competitively priced, if not the lowest priced price/performance leader IMHO.
User manual: Written in a variety of languages, so there's only 12 pages of English info which is on the low side of what should be in there. (I've written full user manuals for some technical software products in the past, so please excuse my picky-ness here). It's great that the product is intuitive enough for the average person to use, so you'll thankfully likely not need to go to the user manual after a once over read or two. The initial use/charge procedure is not well described. In essence it's simple, just plug & place the port in a spot that's clear for 1 meter on each side & 2 meters out from wall, turn on the vac and you can place it on the two contact points manually (verified contact when you get intermittent red / blue lights on top of the unit). Let it sit until it's fully charged (in our case that was a couple hours as it came somewhat charged already), then use. The manual warns that you must charge for 24 hours, but that's not possible when the vac auto exits from the charger once it's full. My other main complaint on the manual is that the icons which correspond to the same icons on the remote control unit are virtually indistinguishable as they are printed so small. You'l likely need a magnifier to be able to match them up with the remote control buttons.
Cliff detection (Anti-falling) - A great feature (in concept) which virtually all robotic vacuums will likely have these days. Unfortunately, this works by having the sensors of the robot detect a dark spot in front of it, or a black color which it apparently decides must be a cliff, so stop & back off. Unfortunately, our main dining area area rug has some significant black colored swirls in it, which does stop the DEIK in it's tracks. Being a black swirl, it will try to go around, but eventually decides it's on top of Mt. Everest I guess, so it beeps and stops until it's rescued. I'll give this one an annoyance, rather than a major flaw as most other robot vac's use the same patch of black color = a cliff logistic I assume. It would be nice to be able to turn off the anti-falling / cliff detection in our case as we only use her on the first floor and there's no concern about falling off any surface. DEIK tech support did acknowledge that there is (at least currently) no way to disable this feature.
Ehhh... Stuff that doesn't really matter...
No WIFI / smart phone app. The included remote control works fine, doesn't crash or suck up data space on your phone or have incompatibilities with various iphone or Android versions. Only minor issue is that the included remote has no on / off switch, so I just take out a battery when finished using to reduce battery usage.
Doesn't talk to you in robo-English or other languages either. It just beeps a time or two when somethings going on. You'll get used to it's own language after a short while
No big brand name label: With initial Amazon purchase protection, a one year warranty from a responsive mfg and cheap ( $ 17 - $19) extended warranty via Amazon / Square trade, no real worries
Programmable scheduled cleaning: For us, doesn't matter, but for others with a two person at work household, I can see the need, it's just not an important feature for us.
My initial perception of these robotic vacuums was one of a cute, overpriced toy that was likely not worth the hassle and would create more problems than it would be helpful. Also I thought the prices would be up towards a grand, which they still are for some of the name brand models. The DEIK is an incredible value and works great, especially if you have mostly wood / tile floors with considerable fur and/or foot traffic. If you only have light dust/dirt then a sweeper only may save you a few dollars. If you have thick carpets, then the name brand models designed for that may be better. A dedicated mopping robot will be better if you want a perfectly mopped floor. For all the rest of us, the DEIK is a great all around robot/vac/mop that's a great value IMHO.
After a lot of reading and watching videos online, I decided on the Deik because it can both vacuum and mop. I am a mother with three kids ranging from 3 to teenager. I also have a very hairy Golden Retriever puppy. Our first floor is primarily the tile floors that look like wood, with area rugs. Our second floor is almost all carpet. Here are my thoughts:
-This works great as an every day sweeper and vacuum. It picks up lots of dog hair and dust bunnies that I didn’t even see on the area rugs. It doesn’t seem to have a problem pushing around or working around kid toys.
-It has no problem transitioning from floor to area rug and back! That was one question I had that I could not find an answer to before purchasing. It has gone from tile to a shaggy type rug and a normal pile are rug as well.
-It doesn’t look like it is going to cover the whole room, but somehow it does. I followed this machine around for over an hour in my kitchen. It seemed to have no reasonable pattern, making criss-crosses, randomly changing direction and not making human sense. So, I left the room for a while and when I came back, it had vacuumed everything, even the little things I thought it missed. So, let it do it’s thing.
-I would not truly call this a mop. It is more like a swifter. I put water in it with a little cleaning fluid, like Mr. Clean or Lysol and it does spread it around the floor and do a light dusting. It does not clean up dried stains. For example, my kids dropped a little dot of yogurt on the tile that dried. It went over that drop twice, but it didn’t get it up. I have taken to spraying those areas with an all-purpose cleaner first, so they’re looser when Rosie (our name for the vacuum) gets to them.
-It only sometimes see the difference between area rug and tile while mopping. Sometimes she knows when she is on a rug and she gets off, other times, I have seen her try to mop a rug. I now just lift up the sides of the rug and have no problems in mop mode.
-In vacuum mode on carpet, it does not get everything the first time. It sometimes takes a few passes, but eventually she gets it done.
-It does a great job around corners and furniture legs. The vacuum will detect a corner and do a kind of turn/clean/turn/clean pattern to sweep around the edges well. This helps with dust bunnies.
-It fits under some, but not all of my furniture. She does slide under my cabinets welll. If this is important to you, check the measurements first.
-It does a great job of getting itself back to the charging station on a low battery. My first floor is about 2000 square feet, and she manages to always find her way home.
-It does not fall down stairs! I followed her around the first time she was near stairs, ready to catch her, but she performed like a champ. She would even spin a little at the top of the step, dusting that top ledge.
-It is not louder than I expected, but my husband thinks she is too loud. We can watch tv with her in the room, but she is not silent. We don’t use her while we sleep for this reason.
Overall, I am very happy! I think the vacuum is a great every-day help to keep the floor dust, crumbs and pet dander at bay. I think this would be a fantastic purchase for an elderly family member who has difficulty getting around to clean. They can control it from the remote and it charges itself.
