Kera was promised to marry Sean as payment for a debt owed by her father. Sean is the head of the Foley mafia family, who instead of marrying Kera, surprises everyone by instructing his head of security Deklan to marry her instead. What starts out as basically a business arrangement becomes more.
I absolutely adored Deklan. He's hot and broody and bada$$ and gah, the man is so sweet to Kera. Even though Kera was basically a pawn used by her father to settle his gambling debts, she handled it so much better than I would have. She was a little naive at first, but as she grows comfortable with Deklan, so does her confidence. She and Deklan just seemed to click.
This story has all kinds of stuff going on, suspense, secrets, love, lust, murder, betrayal. It's all there and keeps you guessing. Another great story from this author.
This is Deklan and Kera's story. Kera is a mob princess who has been promised to a mob prince. The deal is arranged by both their fathers but when the "King" dies the prince is no longer ok playing by his daddy's rules. He instead gives his future bride over to his head of security, Deklan.
Kera is young but not naive. She understands the world she lives in and is terrified of the unknown life she has ahead of her with this man. The tall, big, dark, scary man. But to her surprise Deklan is unlike any other man in this world. He's full of layers. Although he's ruthless, aggressive, and violent when he needs to be, with Kera he is nothing but patient, soft, and kind.
It is amazing reading about these two who have more in common than they thought try to navigate a married life together under the darkness they live in. This was fast paced and intriguing.
And Deklan? Wow! You feel him falling deeper and deeper in love with Kera. Their relationship started unconventional but their love grew leaps and bounds over time.
"I don't remember my parents well, but they were good people. They were good to me, and I loved them. They loved each other. I want to remember what that was like, so that I can give that to you."
Even through the violence and destruction around them they hold onto each other for balance.
"Everything's falling apart around me, and you're the only thing I have left to hold onto that makes any sense."
Deklan and Kera are fighting the mob boss and the lifestyle around them. They are digging deeper into the inner-workings of the family and putting together the pieces to find out why/how the boss decide to pair them together. How unhinged is the boss and who is all willing to risk their lives with Deklan and Kera to stop him.
And for the die hard Savage fans like myself, the Arden cameo was incredible!
Thank you Shay for another amazing story!
There are only two things that I wish were different. For one, the story was told solely from Kera’s point of view. It would have been a better story if it also included Deklan’s view point. He was the more interesting character as opposed to Kera who was a 20-year-old virgin who came off as naive and ditzy. Also I wish there were at least a few scenes were Deklan displays jealousy. It would be easy enough to do given how overly protective Deklan is of Kera. Also other men showed her attention that is not surprising given that she was described as very attractive. However Deklan did not seem to have a problem with it. For example she worked with a flirty attractive man but that did not bother Deklan. Also even though he would not marry her, Deklan’s boss still found her attractive and made that clear but again, Deklan response was more protective as opposed to possessive.
Maybe it's because my expectations were set so low that by the time the last word was read, I found that I had really enjoyed the book.
The story was interesting and most of the characters were fairly likable.
The chemistry between the two main characters was great and I really liked the time the author took to grow both the characters' depth and the actual relationship. (Though I think it would have been better to have Kera be more mature...whether basing that off of her life till now or making her older in age.)
Fair warning though. It's not "realistic" and pretty far-fetched with many of the events that end up taking place.
With that said - with the characters and the writing, it wasn't hard to let myself make allowances to stay within the story and accept the fantastical.
