Deklan combines romance with suspense as a young girl is given to a mob family as payment for debt. Only that’s not how it plays out. After the Foley family carries out the favor for a lowly criminal, the debt can only be paid when his only daughter is handed over. Only it’s not the newly crowned mob boss that is going to be the one taking her hand, it’s the family’s henchman, Deklan.
Shay shakes things up a bit, giving us Kera's POV, an innocent young woman who gets tossed into the world of mobsters, hitmen and marriage all over the course of a few days. What I loved about Deklan was that beyond the brooding, strong arm for this mafia crime family, you just knew he had a kind heart.
I loved watching Deklan go from brute to softy when it came from switching from job mode to husband. He was mindful of how Kera’s situation affected her, he gave her a little room to breathe, but also knew when she had to be taken out of her own head. Their chemistry was off the charts once things progressed, but those first moments were laced with a softness that was unexpected.
Deklan was a fantastic love story that instantly will hold your attention. You’ll blush at all the dirty moments, swoon right alongside Kera when Deklan turns on the charm and you’ll be on the edge of your seat until the very last page!
Kera was promised to marry Sean as payment for a debt owed by her father. Sean is the head of the Foley mafia family, who instead of marrying Kera, surprises everyone by instructing his head of security Deklan to marry her instead. What starts out as basically a business arrangement becomes more.
I absolutely adored Deklan. He's hot and broody and bada$$ and gah, the man is so sweet to Kera. Even though Kera was basically a pawn used by her father to settle his gambling debts, she handled it so much better than I would have. She was a little naive at first, but as she grows comfortable with Deklan, so does her confidence. She and Deklan just seemed to click.
This story has all kinds of stuff going on, suspense, secrets, love, lust, murder, betrayal. It's all there and keeps you guessing. Another great story from this author.
Kera’s acceptance impacted on my appeal to her as a character. Her inability to see good times when they leaped in front of her was understandable initially, but her naivety soon became frustrating. There’s a fine line between holding back information and being foolish. In my mind she leant towards the latter more than I was comfortable with.
Deklan was the complete opposite of Kera but together they were dynamic. There was never a question of the chemistry they shared as being genuine. He tore at my heartstrings with his efforts to be a man of unquestionable values making it easy to forget his occupation while I appreciated all the goodness I found in him.
The suspense was predictable but present yet the overall plot didn’t entice my excitement. The pace of the story was good and the rhythm had me turning pages faster than I imagined I was able to read. At the same time, I came across sex scenes I was tempted to skim, despite my appreciation of Kera and Deklan’s chemistry.
What I loved about the story, apart from Deklan, was a few of the secondary characters. Special mention goes to Teagan. She fascinated me with her resolve while not commandeering the roles of the main characters. I hope we get to see more of her in the future. Brian was another guy who caught my attention. His loyalty to Deklan shone light on all I loved about the guy and in turn made me pay more attention to him as an individual rather than another soldier in the Foley family.
Family time was unpleasant to say the least. Sean was a piece of work and he sent my blood boiling with each appearance he made in the story. What I hope is that this book has paid witness to a new family and what has transpired in this book will be the catalyst for books to showcase the secondary characters who caught my attention.
The final snippet I want to share is a cameo appearance from a particular sniper that got my heart racing. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he made it home after his meeting with Deklan that evening!
Deklan, the chemistry between him and Kera, and the secondary characters won my appreciation for this story. My disconnection with Kera’s actions and boredom as well as the plot clouded the overall appeal of Deklan’s story.
