Deklan combines romance with suspense as a young girl is given to a mob family as payment for debt. Only that’s not how it plays out. After the Foley family carries out the favor for a lowly criminal, the debt can only be paid when his only daughter is handed over. Only it’s not the newly crowned mob boss that is going to be the one taking her hand, it’s the family’s henchman, Deklan.
Shay shakes things up a bit, giving us Kera's POV, an innocent young woman who gets tossed into the world of mobsters, hitmen and marriage all over the course of a few days. What I loved about Deklan was that beyond the brooding, strong arm for this mafia crime family, you just knew he had a kind heart.
I loved watching Deklan go from brute to softy when it came from switching from job mode to husband. He was mindful of how Kera’s situation affected her, he gave her a little room to breathe, but also knew when she had to be taken out of her own head. Their chemistry was off the charts once things progressed, but those first moments were laced with a softness that was unexpected.
Deklan was a fantastic love story that instantly will hold your attention. You’ll blush at all the dirty moments, swoon right alongside Kera when Deklan turns on the charm and you’ll be on the edge of your seat until the very last page!
Unlike many arranged marriages plots, Deklan and Kera got along well immediately (after she realized he did not mean to kill her that is). I liked their relationship, however the book began to drag a bit in the middle. I found parts somewhat unbelievable like what really happened when Kera was kidnapped as a teen. Also the structure of the Foley crime family definitely felt off. There only seemed to be 6 members of this crime organization. No hierarchy or foot soldiers or anything you might expect from a powerful mafia family. It just felt off.
Also, as time went on I liked Kera less. She cried a bit too much for my taste, lot's of leaking and running. She constantly asked Deklan for more details about his daily life as a criminal and yet each time she found out she thought to herself that she was sorry she knew. Ok, if that happened once fine but it happened several times. Spoiler alert: I also found the ending completely ridiculous. Deklan was going to lead the Foley crime family with Kera at his side as a co-leader, sharing everything. What? I love romance books featuring criminals that stay criminals and are not reformed by the heroine but Kera herself just did not seem cut out for a life directly involved in the crime.
Finally, we get to see a glimpse of Evan Arden in this book and that is always a pleasure. Savage, though, has a sadistic streak a mile wide when it comes to Evan. Why can she not give the poor tormented man a lasting HEA (not with a prostitute) and stop torturing him?
I had begun to worry that Savage had permantly moved away from writing the kinds of books I like, so I was relieved to read Deklan. This is definitely not up to some of her previous books like Finding Raine that I loved wholeheartedly, but still is entertaining and ends well. I would give this 3.5 stars so I am rounding up to four.
Kera was promised to marry Sean as payment for a debt owed by her father. Sean is the head of the Foley mafia family, who instead of marrying Kera, surprises everyone by instructing his head of security Deklan to marry her instead. What starts out as basically a business arrangement becomes more.
I absolutely adored Deklan. He's hot and broody and bada$$ and gah, the man is so sweet to Kera. Even though Kera was basically a pawn used by her father to settle his gambling debts, she handled it so much better than I would have. She was a little naive at first, but as she grows comfortable with Deklan, so does her confidence. She and Deklan just seemed to click.
This story has all kinds of stuff going on, suspense, secrets, love, lust, murder, betrayal. It's all there and keeps you guessing. Another great story from this author.
