Meet Abby and her eight year old brother, Jamie. Originally from Delaware, now living in South Carolina, Abby and Jamie are staying with Pop-Pop (grandfather) in Delaware for the summer. Bored, the two kids decide to explore the attic. Up there they discover an old stamp album and a secret message on the back of the stamps.
Pop-Pop's Uncle Harold, 85, is a gambler and thus selling their grandmother's old house. Pop-Pop is not happy but doesn't have the money to buy it himself. With Uncle Harold residing elsewhere it is Pop-Pop and the children who go to the house to ready it for sale. Not only is the door open but the house is a mess! Who made the mess? Uncle Harold looking for treasure? Apparently Grandma mentioned treasure in her will but no one has ever been able to find it. Will Abby and Jamie succeed in finding the long lost treasure as they discover each clue?
The dialog between the two siblings in this book is VERY realistic! There is also a valuable message. At the beginning, Abby and Jamie are always fighting, arguing and being disrespectful towards each other. When their behavior is questioned by a couple of young friends they make, Scott and Phyllis, towards the end of the book the two of them realize that they haven't been fighting as much.
Extremely well-written! I don't think I noted one editing error which is very unusual as they like to poke their ugly heads out at me just to irk me when I am reading a book! I HIGHLY recommend this book to families. It is Christian based but is NOT preachy. I read this aloud to our kids (13, 9 and 6) and they didn't want me to stop. Loved it! Look forward to reading the next in the series. Thanks, Liz
A hearty WELL DONE to the author, and when can we expect the next adventure?
This is the story of a brother and sister who live in the South but go to spend the summer with their grandfather in Delaware. While they are there fighting like cats and dogs with each other, they accidentally stumble upon a mystery. Before long, they are searching for clues, meeting new friends, and discovering a new level of their own relationship.
For the age group it is written for, it is well done. As an adult reading it, I could find areas of where more was needed in the way of description and the like, but Ms. Rongione did not write for the adults.
This book is a good safe read for your children. It is from a Christian perspective but not overwhelmingly so. If you like Christian books that don't have religion on every page, this is a book for you. I think this is a great summer read for your child.
There are a few drawings in it but not much. I really liked the glossary at the back of the book that explained some of the terms used in the book. There are even discussion questions that would be fun to go over with your child.
Check this book out. It's worth it.
