As someone who has been researching Intermittent Fasting for quite awhile, I tend to research from many different perspectives. I spend time in articles, YouTube interviews, podcasts, I follow many doctors and personalities who have been successful with IF. I too have been successful with it, best success coupled with a keto way of eating.
Why? Keto eliminates toxic sugars, removes cravings, and feeds the brain, gut, and hormones via healthy fats.
Jason Fung started IF for his patients because they were older and had a hard time understanding low carb, but never does he advocate eating anything and everything for health. Nor deny the actual science besides the benefits of low carb, keto, or other practices like refraining from food before bed.
Gin takes the view that it doesn't matter what you eat...or when...as long as you cram within a short time frame.
Ifyou are a binger, filling your gut with toxic diabetes causing wheat , sugar, etc., is fine as long as you do it once a day within a small frame of hours, you'll lose weight, feel great, and create world peace.
Wheat, sugar, junk carbs, these are things which are leading people to the point of needing to fast. They don't play a positive role in eliminating cravings, water retention, mental health and or hormone issues. I have witnessed many of her followers brag about carb binging, sugar binging, carb crashing, unable to remove their cravings because they aren't choosing healthy foods.
That being said, I witnessed her confront someone in her FB group who was answering a question pertaining to the safety of eating before bed. Why did another member ask? I can only assume because they too heard refraining from eating at night with IF would have greater overall results. But the book doesn't teach this, so the author's followers aren't educated on this topic.
The author claimed she had never heard any doctor say anything about the negative effects of eating before bed. She asked the person for information, the person gave her a Mercola article breaking down the affects on mitochondria while sleeping full, and within 5 minutes this person was removed from the group.
There was no adult discussion via Gin Calhoun Stephens. There was no scientific information provided by her to help her followers, she just deleted the person offering views from actual doctors.
If you want healthy information pertaining to IF, healing diabetes, restoring depleted hormones, safe and sustainable weightloss, diabetes 2 healing and more, I really cannot recommend this book. Keep researching ..there are many other specialists out there who teach about how important nutrition and habits are.
The book is wonderful! Written in such a way that anyone can understand the basic science behind intermittent fasting, this book explains it all without the textbook feel. Easy and light enough to read in one evening, like I did, and inspiring at the same time. This book is a great beginner's guide to intermittently fasting for weight loss. And I'll tell you from my own experience, once you try intermittent fasting earnestly, you'll wonder why more people aren't doing it!
~Nicole S. lost 220 lbs with IF in 17 months
* very clear explanation of the role of insulin and the reasons fasting is the way to go
* excellent, short explanation of different methods of IF. I wish I had had these when I first started exploring fasting.
* great chapter on OMAD (One Meal A Day) - as someone who is aspiring to this form of fasting, this was most helpful in my own situation. What does it really mean? What sort of flexibility is there? I think this would be very helpful to anyone thinking about OMAD. Gin gives real-world examples from her own journey that I found very encouraging. What will I do on my cruise in May?? Now I know.
* loved the chapter on what to eat. Very practical reflections on whether, if or when to do low carb, etc.
* great personal testimonials from people who have done it
