Every recipe in this book is easy to follow step by step and you know the end result will be delicious! There are many useful tips in regards to what you should ideally keep in your cupboards to be able to whip up a decent meal in a hurry and a great section for the meals and ingredients that are perfect to freeze. This has been really helpful in my case and I can seemingly make something out of practically nothing which is great for the days leading up to pay day when you have to tighten the purse strings.
I ended up buying a second copy of this book for my mother in law who was always a wonderful cook until she suffered a stroke 3 years ago and lost most of the use of her right arm.She always told us everything was fine and then we discovered she had been living on microwave meals for quite some time. When I spoke to her about it she told me that she was actually scared to even try cooking because of the lack of strength in her arm and her memory loss. She was terrified she would set the house on fire. So, I gave her this book with the hope she would give it a try and that she may get some confidence in cooking again. It has more than done the trick! She started with a couple of the simple recipies and now just 4 months later she is confident enough to try baking her own bread. She has been gaining some strength in her arm and boosting her memory just from using this book.I really can't fault this book at all and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
For those not old enough to know, Delia's first 'How to Cheat ...' book, published in the 1970s, was about how to convince people you were a good cook when you weren't necessarily that experienced, expert etc.. This one is mostly about cheating the clock, and producing good food more quickly and easily.
I live in the country, and have limited options for 'popping to the shops' for forgotten items etc.. Although I do cook for the freezer, I also cook a lot FROM the freezer, and Delia has excellent advice on stocking both freezer and store cupboard with easy-to-use and short-cut products, and of course the recipes to make with what you've got. She does a good job of taking hassle out of making 'real food' (like Jamie Oliver), and she and Jamie can't be wrong, can they?
I live in France, so some of the items I might buy if I lived in the UK are absent - there's no way that Aunt Bessie's potato products will make it into my freezer, for example, but as I'm a low-carber this is no bad thing!
Delia herself says that not all her product recommendations are available from the same supermarket (isn't somebody missing a trick here - busy/remotely-located people may not find it easy to shop around and a supermarket which stocked (almost?) everything would surely find favour with them), but of course Amazon can be a good source of store cupboard items, as can E-Bay.
As with so many things in life, the key to this is mostly organisation, probably, and organisation starts with a list or lists! Delia's lists are there in the book to get you started.
The book is made of good-quality materials - I bought a used copy and it arrived in excellent condition.
however, I do have to say that some of the ingredients dont seem to be available in the supermarkets any more . This is a very minor point and I am sure that with a small amount of effort sutable alternative could be found .....RalphHF
