The love story portion of this book was so, so moving. I mean, have the tissues within reach moving. My heart hurt for Chad throughout the story. The reader spends most of the book in Chad's POV, which is unusual. The depth of his pain is never in doubt. We know he hasn't gotten even close to getting over Lauren, nor she him, from the beginning. As they slowly reconnect, we see how they have suffered, for YEARS. Great angsty, pain riddled tale.

I read this book yesterday, and I have been thinking about it ever since. It's been quite a while since a story has stuck with me like this, where I keep rolling it around in my mind, trying to process how I feel about it.

On the one hand, there is this beautiful portrayal of a second chance at love. I mean, the depth of feelings evoked by the love story, for me, was unexpected and simply lovely. I felt Chad's pain, his anger, his guilt, his intense longing for what he has lost. I felt his tension, his mistrust, and finally, his hope in a second chance. My gut clenched, I was breathing faster, I felt anxious for him. I RELATED.

So many touching and heartwrenching moments, such as when the reader learns why Chad is so fastidious in putting away his things had me saying, "Ohhhh, Bless his heart...!" and waving my hand in front of my face, trying not to cry. Didn't help, I cried like a baby. Chad slowly opens himself to the possibility of having his dream come true, yet can't stop the moment of panic when he wakes and Lauren is not in bed with him. Chad's POV during these scenes is a spectacular portrayal of a wounded, haunted man.

Sadly, we have very little Lauren time. Yes, she wants her husband back. Yes, she says she never wanted to hurt him.

My Review:
This is #3 in this series and I haven't read the other 2. There are a lot of details about these organizations and the characters within them that I felt like I was missing by not having read the other 2. I may be wrong about that, but this story simply seemed to be missing big chunks of information or the information that was there was extremely confusing to me. Other than that, this was a great book.

Heart-breaking from chapter 1, this book throws you into the heartache that has consumed both Chad and Lauren's lives since the death of their baby girl, Emily, and the collapse of their marriage. It's obvious from the very beginning that both Chad and Lauren desperately love each other....still, but they were deceived into thinking otherwise.

There is a suspense element to this book, but it is very secondary to the passion between Chad & Lauren. Their emotions leap from every page and suck you into their heart-wrenching grief...for the loss of their baby girl, to the loss of their marriage, to the simple loss of a touch or a glance that makes up the love and romance in a relationship. They have lost everything- both of them and neither one of them have ever recovered from that loss although it's been 8 years.

This story was as beautiful as it was emotional. I need to read the other 2 to see if they make it more complete. I have a feeling that they will and that's all it would take to make this an A+ story in my mind.

I like stories of two ex's who still love each other, but then there's conflict because of whatever misunderstanding pushed them apart in the first place. This story had some really touching moments highlighting what Lauren and Chad have done to compensate for the loss of the other person in their life that shows that they still care about each other and really felt the loss. However, I had a hard time getting into this story and the characters. Although I can't exactly pinpoint the reasons, I think it was probably a combination factors. The first was that it was confusing to understand what kept these two apart in the first place (and the factors were so hard to believe once you did find out), plus I felt as though Lauren (the ex-Miller) had to make more amends to try to reconcile this relationship even though she's suffered just as much as Chad and, lastly perhaps there was a bit of needing the "men to take charge" of the situation to make it right even though Lauren was supposedly just as smart and capable of a person in the protection arena. It's not that any of these factors were strongly present, but there was just enough of the tilt in this direction that when you combine all these elements, it made it a less enjoyable a read for me.

Tis book had a different angle due to the fact that the main characters Chad and Lauren had already been married. Due to horrific life circumstances like their infant daughter dying, and an op gone wrong for Chad they ended up with huge misunderstandings, family interference, that kept them apart for close to 10 years.
This was a good book, but there were a few places where it felt like something was missing for me...

One quick decision, a family tragedy, a nosy sister, and a twist (can't tell you) makes Deliberate Deceptions an amazing addition to the Hauberk Protection series! Thank you for giving Chad and Lauren another chance. This story is so full of angst my heart was hurting for them both. Chad has been assigned to guard his ex-wife Lauren and she is keeping secrets. He's not sure he can do this there is too much of a past between them and it still hurts to see her. He quickly realizes he still has feelings but something is off. What is it? Lauren still loves Chad as well but there are secrets she can't tell him. Can this still work? Secrets get revealed, truths come out, and healing can begin. GREAT LOVE STORY - I cried. great sex and lots of emotion.
