An honest view of the challenges faced by exorcists to free the possessed.

I found the film "Deliver Us" to be very interesting. The film primarily focuses on a Franciscan priest-exorcist, Fr. Catalado. He portrays a veteran exorcist who is able to discern the difference between individuals who are demonically possessed versus those who are mentally ill. (Though it appears for some individuals one can be both demon-possessed and mentally ill. Father Cataldo's deep faith, compasssion and strong character keeps him on a seemingly unending apostolate of freeing individuals from the grips of satan. The film also focuses on the lives of some of the suffering individuals and their loved ones to illustrate their expectations, disappointments and for some their deliverance.

The only flaw for the film per se is that it could have opened with an explanation about demonic possession and the process of discernment by the Church on whether an affected person needs intervention by exorcism or psychiatry. One thing is still true--the need for exorcists and psychiatrists will continue to rise until humankind stops disregarding its deep need to have a relationship with its God.

It was Halloween and I thought I'd give this a try. The movie shows the brutal reality of possession and the power of good over evil. You gain some insights into why these people became possessed, however, I would have liked to have learned more. The English sub titles change very fast to keep up with the dialogue and adds to the believability. These are not actors and this is obviously not staged. You learn that this is a phenomena that is on the rise in our times.

What I saw were very bitter sexually repressed Catholic clergy who seemed to hate women, especially, and men too, who were suffering psychologically. I saw them berate and put down those people who needed their help. I saw some very pitiful people, who maybe just needed real family and friends to support them, get abused by the Italian Catholic system. Overall very tragic and depressing and proving the Catholic church is a vile entity itself.

This film provides insight into a world few people know about but depending on how they live their lives, may be heading toward. That said, I wish the film was longer and covered more case studies. I hope the filmmaker will do a sequel or a series across Europe to see how exorcists, exorcisms and the people who need them differ from country to country. I am grateful to the filmmaker.
