Mary Monroe is a New York Times bestselling African-American fiction author. Her first novel, The Upper Room, was published by St. Martin's Press in 1985. She is best known for her novel God Don't Like Ugly (originally published by Dafina Books in Fall 2000), and the series revolved around the characters first introduced in this book. Mary Monroe is the third of four children, born in Toxey, Alabama. She spent the first part of her life in Alabama and Ohio, moving to Richmond, California in 1973. Successful author and mother of two children, Mary currently resides in Oakland, where she continues to write bestselling novels.

Wow. You just have to read this to come up with something more suitable. I loved the way this story was presented, in the present, and reverting to details from the past. It helped me become more sympathetic to the main character, Christine. She had a hard life, basically raising herself. It's a wonder she lived so long considering the choices she made. What I didn't get was why JR couldn't realize what his family was doing to his marriage. Or why he spent so much time at work. In the end, he and Christine both paid for his negligence. At times, this book was humorous, and then so sad it was depressing. But together, it made for one awesome read.

....this book was great. I read a lot of books and trust me if this book was wack I wouldn't have made it past the first few chapters!
Mary Monroe has once again crafted a well written, dramatic yet quite humorous tale! I truly enjoyed it! When it first started off I was like what is going on in this story. As I continued to read it all made perfect sense.
Christine Thurman is married to successful entrepreneur Jesse Ray Thurman. But she is miserable in her life, so this leads her to make some very drastic life altering decisions, in order to get what she sees as happiness.
Along the way you will meet a quirky cast of characters including the infamous Wade, snaggletoothed Jason (lol), begging Miss Louise, sweet Miss Odessa, Christine's cold as ice parents...the Martinez's and Jesse Ray's "broke as a joke" family from hell Harvey, Adele and her twin terrors(Odette and Odell), and finally Miss Rosetta, JR's mom.
Read this unusual tale of deception and desperation and see why Christine does what she did and if she'll pay the ultimate price.

That is the only word that I can say. I enjoy this author's writing and stories. This book was hard to read because it was so sad. Until the ending everything was clear about no love. Cannot imagine the pain that everyone had to endure. I ended rereading "Family of Lies" during my break from this book because the sadness was too painful.

I enjoyed this book and could not wait to get to the end. It taught you a lot about family and greed but also true love. At one point in the book my heart almost jumped out of my body (Famous Mary words). It was when the husband mentioned a certain name. Do not want to give away too much. Definately get this book. It is a quick and compelling read.

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did my first one I read of hers (God Don't Like Ugly), Monroe's characters always intrigue me and I find myself turning pages because even thought the kidnapping plot in this story seems far fetched at first, I found myself swallowed up in the drama and had to find out what happened. Great read!
