My Review:
I've read and enjoyed this entire series, but this book was without a doubt my favorite of the trilogy. And note...this is a trilogy, but besides a passing mention of the previous characters, they are COMPLETELY stand alone. You will never know the difference if you haven't read the others so I say read the ones that appeal to you the most. (Although, like I said, they were all worth reading.)

But this, I really, really liked it. Lance and Chris have a May/December relationship. Chris is 35. Lance is 22. That is something that Chris is NOT comfortable with. He knows that this with Lance is temporary and that soon Lance will come to his senses and realize that he needs someone more. Regardless, Lance is going to graduate school in California in just a few months, so this is temporary. No getting attached matter how perfect the two seem like they are together.

The entire book is told from Chris's point of view and he's just so sure that they can't work long-term. It's never even an option to him. He gave up his dreams for a guy he loved. He refuses to let Lance do the same. Chris refuses to even consider that they might have a permanent, long-lasting thing between them. He cares too much to let Lance give up his dreams.

Seriously, this book is so good. Lance has agreed to the rules set out by Chris that this is casual, but it's so obvious that Lance's feelings are so much deeper. And Chris simply refuses to consider any other option. This has to be casual. There are too many differences between them for it to be anything more. That age difference is a HUGE hangup for Chris, despite the fact that Lance is so much mature than his age. Lance knows what he wants and I loved his character for that.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

The Players: Chris O'Neal and Lance Degrassi

The Story: Chris O'Neal is a mid-thirties coffee shop owner and introvert. His split from his last partner was more than two years ago and he still hasn't emotionally recovered from the hurt and betrayal he felt at the time. He's put all his time into making his shop work and doesn't feel the need to get back into the dating world. Until his new bakery delivery driver walks into his shop.

From the first, Chris can't take his eyes off Lance and in his mind, its all look - no touch. Lance has to be in his early 20s and for a guy like him to try to hook up with a guy like Lance, it just wouldn't work. No matter how attracted he is to Lance, he knows it wont work. After all, if a guy his age won't have him, why would Lance?

What worked/what didn't

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I understand Chris' reservations about dating someone younger, but to the extent that it did, had me skipping over some of Chris' inner monologue.

I really enjoyed Chris' actions when he stepped up and admitted what was really going on in his head and telling Lance. Lance's anger was real and so was his forgiveness.

Since the release of the first book in the Portland Heat series, Ms. Albert's talent has become clearer with each successive book. On a whole this is a series defined by its storylines and characters that has given me hours of enjoyment. With this latest installment though, my favorite of the three, I was given a sweet and memorable read with characters who jumped off the page as they claimed my heart. Though the emotions being dealt with here were intense the action never devolved into uber-angst nor went over-the-top, the characters and their feelings remained human which fully immersed me in the story from the very first page to the last.

Upon getting our first glimpse of college student Lance in his Uncle Vic's story he'd left an indelible impression with his exuberance for life, perpetual optimism, and fun and flirty nature. In this romantic tale Lance shows that he's wise beyond his years as he subtly tries to get the reserved and overly serious Chris to look past age and focus on the love growing from their friends with benefits relationship. Lance was immediately drawn to Chris but had to work to gain entrance into his life because of Chris' fears over age and lost dreams. Lance ultimately had to wage a battle of charm, playfulness, and sensuality that was immensely entertaining before Chris finally gave in with a scorching one-night stand that caught both of them off guard. Their burgeoning relationship was sweet yet sexy and despite their plan to keep things casual their connection reached surprising depths with Lance opening Chris' eyes to living life instead of hiding away.

Another win ^^

Having the hots for a guy 13 years younger is not easy. For a number of reasons.
And so it also isn't for Chris when he first meets 22yo sexy, hot, smart, sweet and just plain adorable Lance.
He's not ready for what hit him just then, a truckload of yummy lust for starters.
Can't be though. Lance deserves better than an (inked, sexy, grumpy) old man, doesn't he?
He has his coffee shop. And two speeds, bitter and grumpy. And that's fine with him. He tells the story, his POV throughout the book.
But young Lance has his mind set on what he wants from life and so when he (beautiful, sweet, sexy Lance) pursues Chris relentlessly, his desire for the younger man trumps everything else.
And when lust and the HOTTEST sex ever for both of them turns into affection, warm, quiet nights and love, he cannot wrap his mind around the idea of young Lance giving up on his dream, his life... on anything really, just for him.
Life is not easy. Is also not full of second chances.

I'll let you know right now this ends well. Their lives are not fully in place but the HEA is right there for you to warm yourself over.

And then, life starts ^^
