Dell Computer Dell Portable Backup Harddrive-1TB (784-BBBE)
The Dell Portable Backup Hard Drive allows you to protect your valuable files, data and media by using the file management software that allows you to easily schedule auto backups, store documents and transfer data. Featuring a lightweight, compact form factor that you can take on the go, the software also is compatible with popular social media sites, providing even more use cases.
A portable 1 TB drive with automatic backup
This portable hard drive from Dell makes it easy to back up files, store and transfer data, and even share to social media sites. Automatic backup software comes pre-installed on this portable drive, which is compact and lightweight, so you can keep all your important files with you on the go. The 1 TB capacity provides plenty of space to save all your photos, videos, music and more.
Lightweight and portable
The drive's lightweight design makes it easy to take with you. Thanks to its compact form factor, it takes up very little room on your desktop. Since it's powered by a USB port, there's no separate power cable to plug in or carry. It's an ideal on-the-go companion for laptops and USB-compatible tablets.
Easy-to-use backup software is pre-installed
The drive comes pre-loaded with automatic backup software from Seagate that's ready to use as soon as you plug in the drive. The software lets you schedule automatic backups in the user-friendly Seagate Backup Dashboard.
USB 3.0 for faster data transfers
Dell's portable hard drive features USB 3.0, which is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. This means files transfer more quickly between the drive and your device and backups finish sooner. It's also backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.0, so older devices can still connect to this drive.
Works with popular social media sites
The Dell portable hard drive can upload directly to top social media sites, including Facebook, Flickr and YouTube. The drive can also automatically backup the files you've shared on these popular sites.
Easy integration with Windows 7 and Windows 8
Dell's portable hard drive with automatic backup software integrates easily with both Windows 7 and Windows 8. The included Seagate software ensures your important files are backed up and protected. The drive requires one free USB port.
The Dell 1TB Portable External Hard Drive makes it easy to transfer, store and share your pictures, movies, music and other important files. A sleek design and light weight make this drive easy to carry, and because it's powered by your PC's USB connection, you don't need to carry an extra power cord.

I did have some problems installing the Seagate Dashboard Installer, which is optional, but necessary if you want automated backups. When I first ran it, it was saying something crazy about how a disk needed to be present. I continued on with that despite the errors but then Windows warned me that the install may have not worked right. Thankfully Windows asked if I would like to reinstall using the recommended technique. Once I did that, the Seagate software installed fine.
This software is designed to help you back up your PC as well as data from "social media". Which folders? By default, the following folders and areas are backed up:
->Personal user folder
->All non-system files
The folders it copies as well as how often the backup runs is configurable via a slick wizard, if you so desire. And the software does support restoring the data to another machine, if need be.
For social media, the software backs up and retrieve from the following: YouTube, Flickr, Facebook. The software provides a nice folder view when dealing with these web sites making it really easy.
Dell's product info mentions Microsoft Windows (and never Mac) but the Seagate software does have a Mac OS version so I am a little confused there. The first time you run PC backup, it is a long process so it is best to run it overnight or when you are away. The software starts off with "Continuous" back up which watches for changes and backs up shortly after the changes. That's too frequent for me -- I prefer once a week so I setup a new schedule which, again, was super easy. After the first time backing up, the software is smart enough to check for changes each week, and then append those changes to the existing backup thus saving a lot of time.
Although I only have USB 2 (which is slower than USB 3), this drive is faster than my Western Digital 320 GB portable drive from a few years ago. I'm moving about 18MB per second which isn't even as fast as USB 2 will go. And the drive is much smaller and more quiet than my other drive. The only thing I like better on my older drive is that it has more intuitive status lights. The Dell has one light, and the meaning of the light state is as follows:
Off - drive is off or in hibernate mode
Low - drive is on stand by
High - drive is idle
Fade High/Low - drive is transferring data
My gripe about the light is that the fading from low to bright is not as clear as you would think. If I can't quickly look at a status light and know the state the drive is in, then the designers I think can do better.
Finally, the product dimensions listed on Amazon are the size of the box the drive comes in. The dimensions of the drive itself is 4 3/8" x 2 7/8" x 3/8". On a kitchen scale, the drive weighs 5.7oz without the USB cable.
When using as a backup drive, Dell provides Seagate Dashboard, which puts YOU in control. You can use it to upload pictures and videos to social media (like Facebook), or you can download pictures and videos from social media sites to the harddrive. You can set Seagate Dashboard to automatically backup whenever your files are changed, or you can schedule a backup hourly, daily, weekly or monthly.
I really like that my husband can use for extra storage on his Acer Iconia Tab W500-BZ467 10.1-Inch Tablet, which only has a 32GB harddrive. Even with the SDHC card installed, that only gave him 64GB of storage space. Plugged this baby into the USB port on his tablet, and now he can save as many files as he wants without worrying about *ever* running out of space.
Now for my only complaint about this Dell harddrive. There is a link on Seagate Dashboard to download the owner manual, but that link took me to Dell's website, where it required software that would have scanned my system to see which model harddrive I have before it would let me download the manual! I already know the model number is 784-BBBE, but even going to the product page, I have to let Dell scan my computer before they'll let me download the owner manual. Not cool. I can't think of a valid reason Dell wants to scan my computer before allowing access to the manual, so I'll just do what I can figure out on my own. This means I can't find any other cool features this drive might have. This is why I deducted a star.
