The Inspiron 5000 Series 2-in-1 can be equipped with available 802.11ac WiFi for fast, long-range wireless connection with less buffering and drops compared to older designs.
Buttoned up: No matter what you set your power and multimedia buttons to do, we've tested them all to survive 40,000 pushes with no problems.
Twist and turn: Call us excessive, but after twisting an Inspiron laptop's base and lid more than 25,000 times, we can assure you the parts inside are well protected.
Turn up the heat
From locker rooms to locked cars, we test Inspiron laptops for survival in harsh short-term heat conditions of 65°C/149°F.
Everything hinges on it: We test Inspiron laptop hinges to ensure they still feel tight, even after opening and closing the lid 20,000 times.
Keys to success: We test commonly used keys for 10 million keystrokes and touch pad buttons 1 million times with no failure. So go ahead, finish your novel.

We like this laptop so much we sold off a 15.5" ACER that my wife had been using and she switched to this one. The smaller size Dell is lighter, thinner, and fast enough for my wife's use.
One feature that both my wife and I didn't like about the larger 15" laptop was that it had a numeric keypad built into it. That naturally forces the keyboard to be shifted to the left relative to the screen. We just can't get used to having that offset. In fact even on my desktop computer I use a keyboard without the numeric keypad which makes the distance from the keyboard to the mouse shorter. We also like the backlit keyboard. Both my wife and I use our computers in areas that can be quite dark in the evening where the lights in the room don't illuminate the keyboard.
This 13" Dell has a full size keyboard which is nice to type on. Both my wife and I are touch typists. The screen is bright and sharp.
My wife doesn't use much disk space so we replaced the 1TB hard drive with a 256GB SSD. It runs quite fast.
I did try some photo editing on this laptop and it performed quite well.
The SD slot is a must in our house. All of our cameras have SD cards so it is easy to pop in a set of photos for viewing and editing.
The bezel around the edge of the active display is over 1/2", more than most other laptops I've owned recently.
I really appreciate the volume rocker on the right side. I didn't know how important this was until I used my other (much more expensive) laptop to watch some movies and that laptop doesn't have an external volume control. I must use Shift+key to turn the volume up or down. That is particularly annoying when I have the laptop in tent mode.
Battery life is easily eight hours. I watched two 2-hour movies on it back-to-back and it only used 40% of the battery.
Ports are fairly basic... and include HDMI and USB 3 and SD card slot. There are no USB-C ports. At times the machine feels a bit slow. It takes about 30 seconds to boot up which is pretty slow compared to my other SSD based machines. I was also curious as to the RAM configuration and what it would take to upgrade the machine to make it zippier. The rear cover removes with just a small screwdriver and you have access to the guts. Take a look at my internal pictures if you plan to upgrade the machine after you buy it. The system ships with a single Samsung 8GB DDR4 SODIMM installed, which is good news if you planned to upgrade it since you can simply toss in another SODIMM to get 16GB, but bad because if you planned on sticking with 8GB, you would have been better off with two 4GB sticks because Dell has eliminated the benefits of dual channel memory by only populating one of the memory banks. The 1TB HD is a pokey/cheap Western Digital Blue 5400 RPM model. This is no doubt the bottleneck of this laptop and replacing this with a nice SSD would make this machine way more pleasant to use. I plan to upgrade this to an SSD and upgrade the RAM in the coming weeks and this should dramatically help with boot times and application load times.
As the system ships, it's a nice system that would serve most users fine. If you like to hot rod your machines then I think this machine has a bit of head room that some additional RAM and an SSD would unlock for a few hundred. If given the choice, I'd recommend getting the system with a 256 or 512GB SSD from the start. Old fashioned hard drives are just not a good fit for laptops anymore unless you really need a ton of storage.
