*** Updated Review ****
After 4 days of use, this charger inexplicably quit working - it still powers my laptop but will not charge up the battery. I borrowed a charger from someone I know who also has a Dell D531, and their charger worked just fine with my computer - the battery immediately began charging again. Also, for those of you who are more tech-savvy, here's the message I received on my computer screen:
Using this charger, the battery status was listed as "online" but there was no mention of "charging." The battery charge level also remained the same - about 8 percent. As soon as I plugged in my friend's charger, the battery status changed to "charging" and within a few minutes, the battery charge level had kicked up to 20 percent. (You can find this information on the Power Options icon in the Control Panel on Windows XP. Just click on the battery icon.) So there's definitely something wrong with this charger, and I'm going to return it to Amazon for a refund.
Update #2: The seller was courteous and prompt in processing a complete refund after I returned the defective charger.
However, it seems to put out some interference, as my wireless mouse drops range rapidly if it's plugged in. The range returns to normal when I switch to a different adapter, so I think it's probably a shielding issue. Not really a huge deal, as this will be a backup laptop, but it's worth mentioning.
The computer doesn't recognize it as a Dell unit either, and gives a warning (both on boot and in Windows) that it isn't genuine and won't charge the battery, and that the computer will run at a lower speed. Despite this, I found that it does charge the battery and the computer runs at full speed.
So this is far from a perfect replacement. However, Dell's own units are of such abysmally low quality (I had 3 fail in the first year of owning my laptop), that this one can hardly be worse.
Worth it for the price (much lower than buying from Dell), with the above caveats.

Dell makes these to "pair" with their computers so that you can only replace them with a dell charger. Ridiculous customer service! I have stopped buying Dell products.Published 1 month ago by Mark Twain
I lost the original. A computer isn't much use if you can't keep it charged. I recommend it.Published 5 months ago by Ron Overton
After one week it just stopped working... really bad quality. I don't think it's original Dell. Amazon needs to do something about this kind of product, you cannot say it is... Read morePublished 15 months ago by Nelson Garcia
