For about a month or so I had been using it with the stock config (500GB HDD, 4GB RAM) and the performance was decent. It probably won't blow you away and surely isn't ultrabook grade by any means but for the price it pleased me, at least. Recently I made a couple of changes, which I had planned when I purchased. I swapped the spinning hard drive for an SSD (Crucial BX100 250GB) and replaced the stock 4GB RAM with an 8GB stick (also Crucial, note: the computer has only one RAM slot which takes DDR3L). Now the performance is fantastic, cold boot takes only a few seconds, all applications are very responsive and I can have as many browser tabs and youtube videos open as I like!
I would definitely recommend this upgrade if you have the chance.
I like the keyboard; it has a nice white backlight and the keys are fairly shallow but typing is still easy and I am finding now, as I type this review, that I can be almost as accurate with key presses as most other laptops I have experienced. You should bear in mind that the keyboard really needs to be this way due to the convertible nature of the laptop. Speaking of, this is a nice feature and can be useful for watching movies or something with the laptop on your lap; flipping the screen around and using it as a viewing device is a pleasure and really enhances the experience compared to viewing over the keyboard as you would on a regular laptop. Also the hinges feel sturdy and like they will last and they keep the screen steady.
The laptop is relatively quiet. I find that a lot of the time the fan is off entirely and it runs silently as a result but when multitasking there is an audible whir which makes it louder than an ultrabook or tablet but is not intrusive or overpowering.
Despite the fairly (nowadays) low resolution the IPS touch display is very nice. Viewing angles are solid as expected and with the smallish size pixel density is fine so if you are not too close you probably won't be bothered by jaggy edges very much. The touch is easily as responsive as most tablets I have tried (including recently an Nvidia Shield tablet) and the screen feels nice to touch, like a tablet screen would.
Overall the laptop is very pleasing, feels well built, looks great, runs quick and cool, is light and very portable, has some neat unique features and is upgradable if you find a good deal and are willing to spend a little extra time to improve Dell's solid foundation.
NICE SIZE SCREEN , AND EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIKE THE STYLUS IS A GREAT FEATURE THAT IT HAS A SLOT ON THE LAPTOP SO YOU DON'T LOOSE IT..IS FAST I USE THE TABLET MODE AND THE LAPTOP MODE , WORKS GREAT . SOME TIMES I WILL LOOSE INTERNET CONNECTION BUT IS NOT A DEAL BREAKER . THE BATTERY LIFE IS NOT THAT GREAT . THE COMPUTER IS NICE BUILT AND I WILL SAY PERFECT WEIGHT AND SIDE TO CARRY..LOVE THAT THE KEYBOARD ILLUMINATES BECAUSE I LOVE TO USE THE LAPTOP AT NIGHT WITH THE LIGHT OFF AND THAT FEATURES MAKE MY NIGHT!
I WILL RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT I HAVE THREE ASUS TABLETS THAT I LOVE AND ONE 17 INCHES TOSHIBA LAPTOP , ONE OF THE TABLETS IS THE ONE THAT YOU CAN DOCK IN , THEY ARE ALL WINDOWS 8.1 , BUT I BUT THIS LAPTOP BECAUSE IS 500 GB MY TABLETS ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE SO I AM RUNNING OUT OF GB AND IS THE SAME GB THAT MY TOSHIBA LAPTOP BUT WITH THE CONVENIENCE OF BEING A LAPTOP AND A TABLET IN ONE DEVICE SO RIGHT NOW THIS LAPTOP HAS REPLACE MY TWO TABLETS AND MY 17 INCHES LAPTOP BUT I STILL USE MY 8 INCHES ASUS WINDOWS 8.1 TABLET WHEN I JUST WANT TO CARRY SOMETHING SMALL IN MY PURSE OR AT NIGHT WHEN I AM DOING SOME LAST WORK THINGS.
I WILL RECOMMEND THIS 2 IN 1 LAPTOP
Bought this in 2015. I had to send two back because they were refurbished not new. My cheapest tablet download faster than this Dell. About half of my downloads stop half the way through. All Bluetooth devises including a Microsoft mouse will not attach automatically and after manual connect it will disconnect after a couple of hours. If I have more than one Bluetooth device it takes several manual tries to get all of them connected. The Windows crashes at least four times a month and requires reboot.. I have NEVER had Google crash but this machine does it a couple times a week. I have several Dell laptops at work and no problems with them even after 10 hours a day. I do not trust this machine DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. I use this machine to read news papers, check emails and watch Amazon movies. The screen is nice when it works. Forget it if you want help. I am looking for a replacement and am afraid to give it away because they might bitch at me for giving them something that doesn't work.
