So let's get the contentious bit out of the way: There are, depending on the configuration of you Alienware M18x, two different power adapters. A 240 watt and a 330 watt version. The 330 watt unit is specified for the top tier 18x systems, dual processors and/or SLI graphics. Using the 240 watt unit on these will prompt an error message that the system will run a a reduced capacity.

I have a more mundane 18x (Alienware AM18X-8636BK 18-Inch Laptop (Space Black), so 240 it is for me. This adapter was identical to the one that shipped with my laptop (Delta), right down to the layout and verbage on the label.

Under load for ~24 hrs, the case temperature on the adapter remained within 1-2° of that recorded with the original ( I purchased this one as a leave behind spare ).

The item did ship in just a plastic bag with the wall cord itself loose in the box. My item was purchased from Star_Power and fulfilled by Amazon.

Purchasing power adapters are always a bit of a crap-shot. Actual OEM, generic, second hand, refurbished, blemished or third-tier supplier. In these situations I always purchase or have it fulfilled by Amazon so the return process is no-hassle.

In this particular case, I'll be keeping the adapter.

Not genuine Dell Delta power supply as pictured. Was a hacked up flextronic brand marked on the outside. Inside the casing the power supply has clearly been modified (see picture) to have the green dell data wire connected to ground. This tricks your Dell laptop into thinking its a "good" power adapter. Whoever did this also did a terrible soldering job. While it will charge and work I wouldn't trust this with your expensive laptop.

This is a very poorly made power adapter. I appreciate that they really wanted to have that little blue light and I'm sure some people find it very pretty, but it compromises the quality of the product. Due to the way the cable is setup around this light, the slightest bit of tension over time will begin to damage it beyond repair. Simple things such as having having the cable hang down off a desk, off to the side, or any other standard laptop configuration that doesn't involve the cable being kept perfectly straight is going to cause problems. First the plastic will break, then the light will crack, and finally the inner wiring will be left for you to delicately keep safe from the elements before they fail too.

On my other laptops? No problem, because they use a cable with a sensible design. My 5 year old laptop still has the original cable from the box, and there's an even older one that still functions perfectly as a backup. This one? I'm on my third. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's an alternative... I'll likely just switch to the older laptop for good when this cable inevitably breaks six months down the line.

The charger is much more compact for travel and on the go use. The down side is that it cannot keep up with the computer's power consumption during heavy use such as gaming or high res movies (there is lag). I ended up using the full size charger...

Thanks to the supplier and Amazon Prime I was back online in less than 24 hours. I ordered this around 4pm on Monday and had it by 3pm on Tuesday. It shipped from New York to Florida overnight. I needed this badly so I paid the $3.99 for 1-day shipping (2-day would have been free). The power supply appeared to be brand new and instantly fixed the problem I was having. Thanks!!!

Different mfg than what came with my Dell Precision M6700 (OEM was FLEXTRONICS, this one was DELTA) but spec-for-spec its an exact match. Its great to have one for work and home/travel and is well worth the price IMO

I thought it was possible to actually buy a "Dell" adapter or one created by the former Alienware company. Apparently, there is no such thing. I always only received either a "Delta" or "Flextronics" the times I've replaced Alienware adapters, and there is no way to know which one you'll get. To me, it is somewhat deceptive to label these a "Dell Original". It's merely marketing terminology.

June 2012: The packaging was terrible. Amiline Dept, the seller, sent the adapter I ordered for my Alienware Laptop in a USPS priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope, "cushioned" with another flat rate envelope also stuffed inside the package. There also was a plastic cover over the both pieces, the brick and the power cord. One of the 2 plastic covers was the thinnest bubble wrap I've ever seen; the other was just a regular plastic sleeve. These items did not fit well in the flat rate mailer of course, so the package arrived with one side completely burst open.

I guess that would explain why the item arrived looking somewhat worn, perhaps as if it actually is used rather than new. It looks no more new than my old adapter, which I've had for at least a year. The cord is nicked and scratched! I'm really disappointed with how the adapter was packaged, and I hope the packaging is the reason for the item's worn appearance.

I already was prepared to return it, but cannot because I've got work to do on my laptop and my previous Adapter (manufactured by Delta) is dying. I ordered this one from Amiline because (1)Amiline advertised the item as an original Dell mftrd product and (2) the seller received positive reviews. The information provided did not list anything about Flextronics; I guess Dell must not actually manufacture adapters itself?
