The keyboard heats up more than the older model which makes it uncomfortable to type. While there is less noise, the fan starts abruptly and can be loud. The speakers are terrible and it is inconceivable they switched the beautiful sound of the 9530 for these stinkers. Though the word stingers may be more appropriate as the 7590 speakers sting your ears when high volume is used.
I had high hopes with the 4k screen and I am sad to report that the display of the 9530 was just as good if not better. I really cannot explain why Bloomberg TV live does not look as crisp as it looked in the older model. I was able to overcome the color over saturation other users have complained about by using DellPremier and the Intel application, both of which allow for some tweaking. But then, you would expect super sharp images when watching Netflix movies or similar. But it is not happening.
Finally, changes to the keyboard (narrower), the keys (tapping depth) and the sizing of the computer are not that welcome. In fact, tapping keys felt much better in the older model which also felt a lot bigger (screen) in spite of Dell claiming the screen has remained the same size and only the bezels have been made smaller.
I wish they had kept most of the old 9530 and only upgraded the core hardware. The 9530 was just fine and with a faster chip and a few tweaks it would have been superb.
I will not be returning this computer after weeks of customizing it and transferring work, files and personal data. Too much of a hassle. But I somewhat regret having purchased it.
There has been an issue with Amazon which led me to subtract 1 star. During checkout, I was offered the chance to finance the purchase at no cost -Amazon's 18 months equal payment plan-, which I selected. Yet, next day my credit card was charged the full amount! I contacted Amazon services and they told me the funds had only been frozen. But a week later I was able to confirm that my credit card company charged me the full amount. Deceiving procedure by Amazon. I now owe the full amount to my credit card company which created a red hole as I was expecting only a charge of $85, not one for $1,500+. I contacted Amazon again and even after escalating the issue this has not been resolved. Why would Amazon offer interest free, equal payments plans if they don't stick to what they offer at checkout??
Over the last week I’ve been giving this system a tryout and here’s what I’ve discovered.
The screen is glossy and beautiful offering an almost invisible bezel. Photos have true blacks and colors are vibrant. Play a 4K video and you will be drawn right in. Out of the box, the display was too bright and had to be adjusted. I also had to adjust the zoom from 250% to 300% as some program’s commands were just too small and I was experiencing eyestrain after a very short time.
Bootups are lightning fast with the SSD. Transferring large files or a lot of files is a breeze. Opening a folder containing hundreds of photos for the first time, thumbnails rendered almost instantly and they maximized to full size with no waiting even with bigger files. It was torture going back to my older laptop after using this one. Torture! Everything is so quick.
Windows 10 wasn’t activated. I discovered this when I tried to personalize the desktop. I used the Windows activation troubleshooter which fixed it. But why wasn’t Windows activated in the first place? I’ve never had this happen before on a new computer.
Battery life is very good. As an example, at 98%, it offered over two hours of battery left when several applications were running along with Windows updates downloading in the background and over eight hours when the system was idle. Watching videos did not deplete it as readily as other laptops I’ve had. And this is with the gauge leaning more toward performance than battery life. If I wanted to extend the battery, there’s a myriad of settings I can change, but I prefer better performance.
The keyboard could be bigger with larger keys. They had the room. The track pad works flawlessly. Very responsive with built in left/right mouse buttons. I have a laptop with a track pad without those and I was lost when it came to opening right click menus or dragging files. I always have to use a mouse with it. I don’t use the touch screen much; however it also performed flawlessly when I chose to.
The sound is more than acceptable. The speakers don’t have deep bass, but then again laptops rarely do. Throw on some over the ear Bluetooth headphones and the quality is full and rich. There are all kinds of enhancements available with this audio adapter if you have time to play with the settings.
Something I noticed is the fan on this Dell is very quiet. In fact, you rarely hear it. Just a puff of air for a few seconds and that’s it unless the system is really being throttled and even then it only runs for a couple minutes.
Wi-fi is just as fast as promised. I’m getting hard wired speeds on this system using my 5 GHz network and this morning, actually exceeded my wired speed by a click or two.
The only real drawback I can find with this machine (besides the price tag) is the weight. This isn’t a laptop I would want to carry around every day since it is on the heavy side. I view it more as a workhorse that would stay at the house or office offering mobility within that environment, but that’s my personal opinion.
Before receiving this, I had yet to find a laptop that could take the place of my desktop. That would offer the same power, speed, reliability and upgrade-ability. I just may have found it.
One thing to be aware of - Windows 10 Home is not activated initially. Tried many times during this period, it was giving an error message "Windows reported that no product key was found on your device". Tried again yesterday and it was successfully activated. Not sure what was the reason, maybe you need to wait some time until the purchase is verified on Microsoft's side as well.
