By William O. Wood on December 11, 2013
Back when I first bought a Rev A02 Dell U2713H in May of 2013, everything worked fine. However, after a few weeks the USB3 interface with the monitor died. Since I really did not need the USB capability at the time, and the monitor was the best I have seen from Dell, I held off calling tech support. Since then I have seen many reports of USB3 failures, with no real cure after many exchanges by Dell tech support. I finally called Dell tech support a few days ago to see if there were any fixes to the short-lived USB3 hub in the U2713H.

As usual, the Dell tech support reps had no information any fixes. Their solution was to send me a "refurbished" U2713H to see if would work better that the Version A02 I had. I decided to take a chance. I asked the rep to add a note to make sure I was sent a Version 04 or later monitor and to make sure it has everything working including the USB3 interface.

The "refurbished" U2713H monitor arrived via FedEx overnight . It had been shipped from DecisionOne, in Grove City, OH. It was received in nearly brand new condition! No sign of previous use other than being shipped in a reused box. Looking at the back label, this monitor was manufactured in August of 2013. The original version number was covered over with a small paper label that says "Rev A06" instead of the expected Rev A04 or maybe A05.

I unpacked it and set it up for testing with my Dell T7600 workstation's nVidia K5000 video card feeding a Dell 3008WFP and the replacement U2713H with two Display Port cables. Initially my nVidia K5000 saw the U2713H, but it would not allow me to add it as a second monitor.

UPDATED 8/27/14
It took a bit of time to update this review, but in the meantime, a critical issue I had with the 2713H revealed itself: The cyan hue of this monitor I mentioned earlier is due to the colorspace of the monitor set to AdobeRBG, NOT sRGB. This was an error in settings on my part. when I selected the appropriate colorspace of sRGB for web media playback and 8-bit digital capture editing, colors were spot on. To be clear, AdobeRGB colorspace is responsible for a cyan hue when viewing media created in an sRGB colorspace. So far, this monitor is behaving reliably well. A SOLID 4 STARS.

UPDATED 4/2/14
This is my most recent issue with the monitor. It may not be the monitor itself. It may be my calibration device and I am further looking into it, but there appears to be a slight cyan hue to the overall color palette. This monitor does use the most current backlight technology, so I suspect a firmware update for my spider4Pro calibrator may be coming out soon.
Also, the backlight bleed from the corners of my monitor is a joke. I suspect every model comes with a bit of backlight bleed. Again, this is not a game changer for me, the colors remained beautiful and saturated and detail is amazing, but the slight cyan hue makes me a bit nervous for editing.
ALSO!!! Photo editing was much more consistent on my U2412 monitor. Even editing photos for print, the images on the you U2412 were far more faithful to print and web then the images from this monitor. If I had to photo edit I would use the U2412 in a heartbeat.

"First impressions" review. To be updated soon...

I've bought and worked with 2 prior Dell monitors (u2410 & u2412 - reference my prior reviews).

* Color is outstanding... It's like the Festival of Colors in India no matter what you're looking at. Your eyes will smile. I am not a designer, I simply wanted the color for viewing brilliant photos, games, and especially movies (we use my PC as our media center). This monitor delivers fully. Once you see 10-bit color in something like a Pixar film (Wall-E), every other display you see, including 8-bit IPS, plasma screens, and even movie theater projectors will look dull and washed out. Heck, even most of the real world isn't as exciting to look at as this screen. I don't notice any banding in the stuff I spend time on. My girlfriend also appreciates the color in films and is always jealous when we're looking at the same thing on my screen vs her TN panel.
* It has emulation of more limited color spaces for times you don't want the saturation.
* 2560x1440 at 27" is significantly crisper than 1920x1200 at 24" (I've had two quality screens of different makes at that resolution). x1080 has always looked blurry to me over 22", but it's especially noticeable after adjusting to this. Even when you lean in really close, the sharpness stands out. I've also had the 30" 1600P (U3014) version of this; they're about comparable in sharpness, maybe a slight edge to the 27" but it's such a close call if you're looking for a tie-breaker between the two 10-bits...
* Easy to navigate menu, mostly good options. Some options limit other settings for no apparent reason.
* Smooth and easy ergonomic adjustments.
* Deeper blacks than many IPS screens. No noticeable glow. Haven't spotted dead pixels. AG coating doesn't make things look grainy, though glare with a window right behind me can get bad during the sunniest part of the day.
