Product description
Recognized around the world as the top choice in host-based PCI digital audio solutions, the rack-mount Delta 1010 is designed to handle the needs of the most demanding project and professional studios. Superb engineering and ultra-high quality converters deliver fidelity surpassing systems that cost many times more. Multiple inputs accommodate recording numerous tracks simultaneously, including zero-latency monitoring for seamless overdubs. Multiple outs route individual tracks or soft synth/sampler timbres to a mixing console, or directly drive up to 7.1 surround sound systems. The analog outs also remain live for monitoring while mixing or transferring digital signals via S/PDIF. MIDI I/O rounds out everything you need to take advantage of today s music software. Combine up to four Deltas in your system for a maximum of 32 analog and four stereo S/PDIF inputs and outputs. 36-bit Embedded DSP All Delta cards contain a 36-bit embedded DSP enabling a software-driven patchbay/router for all analog and digital I/O all with extremely fast throughput for low-latency software monitoring. A single unified control panel provides settings for clock and sample rates, buffer sizes, individual signal levels for every input and output, adjustable +4dBu/-10dBV pad conrols and digital I/O control on up to four installed Delta cards. The card itself fits into a normal PCI slot in your computer but there is no way to fit all of its outputs onto the back of a PC card. For that reason, this card has a dedicated cable which leads to a rack mounted breakout box where all other connections are made. The bundled software includes an electronic patch bay which makes cabling simpler than it could otherwise be. Once installed, it works well. Getting the thing installed is more difficult. It pays to read the directions.
The driver has to be installed before the card is put in. If it is not, the diagnostics will show everything fine but you will get no sound. Also, if you should have to do a major re-install of the operating system, you need to make sure the card is out. Otherwise the driver will install and work but then disappear after a reboot.
The documentation assumes a fair level of technical competence. If you are working at learning about digital audio, the docs are likely to be above your head. The are easily understandable now but that was not the case when I started.
It's a good box.
I didn't have the driver problems that many people seem to have had. As of 2013, those appear to be resolved for Windows 7.
Unfortunately, my 1010 died. Over a couple of weeks, the audio output was increasingly dominated by a loud buzz. It seems to be a common problem among the 1010's, and is often attributed to cheap capacitors.
If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't mind buying replacement capacitors, then this may be no problem for you.
The sound quality is high enough for me to justify repairing it instead of taking the chance with a new interface.
After a while, though, the output went bad. After a web search, I found it was most likely a bad capacitor. Took it to a repair shop and, sure enough, there was a bad capacitor. The guy told me they were cheap capacitors. For not much more money they could have put in much better. While he had it open, I told him to replace all the capacitors with better ones -- the parts weren't expensive.
Recently, the output has crapped out again -- only getting the left channel. I don't know what the problem is and can't fix it. Looking for a new card. I don't think I'll be using M-Audio.
These can be bought on the cheap on ebay and it's worth it if you are really that hard core engineer that has used these for years. I just want something that connects over usb/firewire works these days.
Back when they offered a version of the pci card that had the extra keyed out notch for PCI-x, they really should have made that an easy process. It was barely a known thing and the company really should have went out of the way to support the product. I won't even mention drivers... oh you know..
I think what is the most telling about m-audio as a company is that this product appears tied to the official m-audio 'store' and they can't get 1 dope over there to at least respond and address these bad reviews. It's pretty much standard practice to have someone get on here and at least respond with an email address offering to help. I don't know why I ever felt loyal to this brand there really is no good reason sadly.
I have had a problem with a capacitor in the card going out --- twice now. Fortunately, I purchased the card back when they were providing a lifetime warranty, and both times they replaced it under warranty without problems.
