Precision drilling is easy with the DELTA Laser Drill Press. It features sixteen speeds for optimal drilling performance in various materials. The rack-and-pinion height adjustment on the oversized woodworker's table is easily raised and lowered to the desired height. The adjustable locking levers allow for easy angle adjustments to the table top while the bright TWINLASER helps provide drilling accuracy every time.
Auto-Tensioning Belt Drive System for Efficient Performance
The 18-900L is unique among other drill presses because of its time-saving Auto-Tensioning Belt Drive System, which ensures fast, easy speed changes while maximizing transmission efficiency with consistent belt tension and motor alignment.
6-Inch Quill Stroke and Best-in-Class Capacity
With a full 6-inch quill stroke, the 18-900L allows for deeper drilling or industrial applications and best-in-class capacity.
Robust Motor and Over-Sized Table for Power and Versatility

Pros: I found the double tilt table exceedingly useful. Never had one before and it came perfectly aligned. Fit and finish were acceptable/good. The "old" made in USA castings had a finer grind surface, but this table was acceptable. The motor was smooth and silent. The belt drive system was also smooth, balanced and silent. The LED light is bright and the gooseneck is stiff (like it should be) and stays where you point it. The on/off switch is large and placed well. The base casting was a little light where the column mated to it. I would inspect yours for cracks (as one gent received one that was pre cracked and his press fell) If I were designing it, there would be a few web reinforcements for that flange. Mine was OK, and assembled easily. Threads were aligned and tapped to specifications.
Cons: The chuck is not good. I measured a runout of around 0.0045. I found it unusable and replaced it with Grizzly G8583 Keyless Drill Chuck, 5/8-Inch that had a runout of 0.0006. Clearly we were now back in the ball game. Be prepared to ditch the stock chuck unless you are very lucky. The arbor was pretty good with less than 0.0003 runout.
Cons: The epoxy/anaerobic compound used to mount the Laser Modules in the swivel housing was blobbed on the trunnions of the laser module. Both my laser modules were frozen upon receipt. This was easily fixed by removing them from the press (there are electrical connectors similar to the LED light) and manipulating the cartridge on the bench with a fine screwdriver to break the compound bond. I then cleaned up the trunnions and reassembled. The laser feature is "interesting" but for perfect accuracy you will still use your eye and a center punch.
All in all I was pleased with this purchase. It's a solid piece of equipment with the only major deficiency I see as the chuck.
- Zero runout. After suffering for years with a wobbly situation on my previous drill press, this is truly welcome.
- FAR less noise and vibration in operation.
- A vastly superior table, with the very welcome forward tilt option. I highly recommend the Biesmeyer fence, which offers safety, accuracy, and repeatability for many common operations. T-slot hold-downs, another basic safety item, can now be readily accommodated as well. For fine metalwork, the table easily accepts my cross-vise and its mounting bolts.
- The depth stop mechanism is a big improvement over the old twist-collar design. The threaded stops don't look all that sophisticated, but in practice they are very quick and easy to adjust precisely.
- Though I was a bit skeptical, the laser is actually handy in certain situations.
Assembly is easy, though installing the very heavy head/motor assembly on the upright shaft would involve a tricky lift requiring at least two strong people. I got around this by assembling the base and shaft, sliding on the head while everything was still horizontal on the floor, then gently tipping the entire unit upright. This went smoothly with two helpers.
This is a next-generation product that represents a real step forward over the frustratingly imperfect machines we all grew up with.
