From influential feminist artist and essayist Anais Nin, Delta of Venus is one of the most important works of modern female erotica and "a joyous display of the erotic imagination" (The New York Times Book Review). In this story collection, Anais Nin pens a lush, magical world where the characters of her imagination possess the most universal of desires and exceptional of talents. Among these provocative stories, a Hungarian adventurer seduces wealthy women then vanishes with their money; a veiled woman selects strangers from a chic restaurant for private trysts; and a Parisian hatmaker named Mathilde leaves her husband for the opium dens of Peru. This is an extraordinarily rich and exotic collection from a master of erotic writing."Inventive, sophisticated . . . highly elegant naughtiness."—Cosmopolitan

Cuban-American Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) is best known for the eight published volumes of her Diaries, spanning six decades of her lifetime and exploring themes of female identity, sexuality, and self-discovery in a manner that seems ground-breaking even today. Born in France, she spent her childhood in Barcelona and New York. After her 1924 marriage, to banker Hugh Guiler, they moved to Paris until the outbreak of the Second World War. They returned to the USA, where Nin divided the rest of her life between New York and Los Angeles.

Her writing is deeply autobiographical, as she found inspiration in her study of psychoanalysis and her personal connections to cultural figures of the 20th century like Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Gore Vidal, Antonin Artaud, Kenneth Anger, Jean Varda, Gloria Vanderbilt, Otto Rank, John Steinbeck and many more. Her literary work includes novels A Spy In The House of Love, Winter of Artifice, The Four-Chambered Heart and Collages and short story collections including posthumously published erotica Little Birds, Delta of Venus and Auletris. Her unapologetic pursuit of personal and artistic freedom, honed over a lifetime rich with emotional and intellectual experiences, offers modern readers a powerful model for understanding their own identities, emotions, and creative impulses.

Delta of Venus joyously explores the art of human sexuality. Anais Nin's writing style is at once lyrical and straightforward. While she leaves no doubt in the reader's mind just what is going on, her countless love scenes are imbued with so much warmth and dignity that one could scarcely find them offensive. But most importantly, Anais understood that sex is nothing without emotion, and it's the emotions of her myriad characters that cause the reader to turn happily florid with every page. She understood that while sex is not to be taken lightly, it's certainly not something to be restrained, either. Lastly, of all the locales depicted in this collection of stories, she lends a special affection to Paris. I suspect that of all of Anais' lovers, the City of Light was the dearest to her heart, to wit: "At five I always felt shivers of sensuality, shared with the sensual Paris. As soon as the light faded, it seemed to me that every woman I saw was running to meet her lover, that every man was running to meet his mistress." and "But we were enjoying an orgasm, as couples do in doorways and under bridges at night all over Paris."

Writing is authors art,and she hopes to be published and make it big someday. She does eventually enjoy great success and acclaim as an author and goes on to teach at the college level. . But in the beginning, she earns some quick cash per page for what is supposed to be hard core porn for a wealthy private collector. She suspects, and I think correctly, that the anonymous customer is actually the publisher himself, that he is not simply the middlemen at all, but the actual collector. He is lusting for porn written by a woman, from a woman's point of view, and he wants her to keep it short and to the point and "without the poetry". He stresses over and over he wants porn written by a woman but WITHOUT THE POETRY. So she used various other authors X and R rated writings for inspiration and for subject matter, and eventually compiles enough short stories to fill this book. Are you curious by now? Well I'm not going to do a spoiler here, I have said enough. I recommend you read the book :)

I just ordered this book and I must say it is fantastic, I am nearly finished with it already and to be honest I wish it was longer. I am not ready to leave this poetic, erotic fantasy world that Anais has laid out before me. I have been reading non stop since it arrived and I just can't seem to get enough. Everytime I close my eyes I am transported to the sensual scenes that her writing gifted to me. A couple of the stories took me out of my comfort zone sexually, but even those are written in such a way that they make you feel the longing and the desire that the characters do. My favorite story in Delta was MATHILDE. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes there erotica to have style and meaning and poetry. Not just trashy sex scenes, if your into the trashy this book is not for you. I just ordered Henry and June written by Anais Nin. I hope its as wonderful as this book.

I'm going to say right off the bat that this book is not for everyone. Many of the stories feature some very specific kinks that to most will no doubt be gut-wrenching. There are a good number of stories in this collection that are pretty disturbing and violent, which made me uncomfortable reading. I could never recommend this book to the average reader looking for your run-of-the-mill pornography.

The stories written for this compilation were all commissioned by a private collector who had instructed Nin to exclude romance and poetry in favor of graphic and sexually explicit stories, which she carried out the latter in great detail. Despite this, Nin was still able to add her personal touch that gave many of the short stories several layers that went beyond sex and explored themes of love, sensuality, and female eroticism as compared to men. She places great distinction between male and female sexuality that is presented elegantly even against the most graphic and sordid scenes.

The biggest issue I had with this collection, besides the distressing nature of many of the stories, was the focus on a set of recurring characters over the course of multiple stories. Most of them started all right at first, but as I got further into the book I started to dislike all of these characters and had to slog through the second half of the book. I found them to be dreadfully boring and almost put the book down entirely.

This is the first review I have ever written of a book that I discarded a year earlier. As such, my memory of it is not so detailed but more crystallized into a brief impression, a feeling.

I tend not to research too deeply the books I buy beforehand, mostly because it spoils the effect. Maybe I should. When I bought this I was hoping for something that captured a bygone era, from an age more innocent than our own, something risque or suggestive, with elements of passion. Something based on romantic love and colorful personalities. Something with one foot in common experience.

But “Delta of Venus” is none of the above. It’s cruel and dark, and off the scale of what should be allowed to be published. Whether it be invention or fantasy, what she imagines is not mildly racy or indecent, it is depraved. How could anyone enjoy graphic descriptions of molestation or child abuse. Like all books that disgust me, I broke its back and dropped it in the bin.

1.0 out of 5 stars I don’t find paedophilia erotic
Reviewed in Australia on July 24, 2019
If you have read about the exploits of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Cardinal George Pell and Rolf Harris. And if you found their stories to be an erotic turn on. Then you will find this book to be erotic. But you should also see a therapist because you are a sick puppy. In one story, a father rapes his children and turns them into sex slaves. In another story, a priest grooms a young boy for his pleasure. The young boy is ultimately pack raped by his classmates.
The popular opinion of the literary community is that this book was groundbreaking because it was written by a woman. BS. I agree with Anais Nin’s own assessment. She believed that she had prostituted her talent to write sick stories for a wealthy patron. she did not believe they were worthy to be published. These stories were edited and published after her death. A literary classic? I don’t think so.
