In addition to these mature themes, the MCs used a lot of curse words at the beginning and some readers may find this offensive. Thus, I would NOT recommend this book to young readers. Otherwise, this would be a good read for Halloween.
The narration in this was amazing, and they added just enough effects to make it better without making into a big production (things like adding a slight echo to show internal dialogue vs external, or actual laughing instead of just reading "he laughed"). Despite my usual habit of mostly reading the kindle version, and only using the audible version for when I'm driving or otherwise in need of my hands, after the first couple of chapters, I switched to solely listening to the book.
As far as plot and story, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The description had me expecting to see an over abundance of anime styling, or have main characters that just happen to be perfectly suited to being sent to a fantasy world, but I was pleasantly surprised.
It feels a lot more like a LitRPG (a style I've recently come to enjoy very much), except the HUD and VR system is nonexistent. The world economy is built around adventurers going in to dungeons to find magic stones that serve as fuel, and they way the magic works also has a very RPG feel to it (spending "points" on abilities to improve), but it is handled beautifully.
I suggest if you are in any way interested in the LitRPG genre, you should give this book a read (or listen). It's well worth the cost.
In short its almost a bit to much of a fantasy book for me but I enjoyed the characters and the world that was built so much that I enjoyed the story despite of my misgivings.
Plus, the protagonists very quickly become quite overpowered. It would be more believable if they were living amongst primitives, but the book was very clear that this was not the case. So the world building had some shaky legs.
The battles, though, are where the author really shines. And he spends most of his time with them. That and training montages. So if that is what you're looking for, then this is the book for you.
The book has an intriguing idea for a sword and sorcery story. People use swords and magic because they have no other choice. Technology is banned by our research scientist/would be god Delos. Luckily our heroes set out trying to make tech with magic. That gives them an edge. They'll need it.
The book is about two average guys into playing with swords learning to use the real things to save a world. They might have to conquer it at some point too. The book builds a strong cast with interesting motives. They struggle and learn to survive in the monster filled slightly medieval world filled with people taken from modern worlds all across the galaxy. I liked the idea, it was fresh and well told. I can't wait for the next book.
Good luck and never-ever give up your dream.
