The Sigma Force is an elite unit of the US Defense Department whose body consists of former Special Forces officers trained in multiple scientific fields and are used in national and international emergencies. When Hawaii is attacked by swarms of wasps, the Sigma Force responds. These are not normal wasps, but ancient wasps who have been dormant, but now brought back to life. When they attack humans and animals the sting will inject their larva, which will eventually move into the bone marrow and thus eating the person or animal from the inside. Ugh.
A sinister Japanese corporate executive, who was involved with the covert biological and chemical warfare on Chinese during WWII, wants to regain the Imperial Japan of the past and has the means to do so, unless he can be stopped. The Sigma Force only has three days to solve this problem, and thus the rollercoaster ride of a story takes off.
Rollins uses a combination of historical fact, a strong dosage of science, a lively sense of imagination and some just too crazy situations to be believed. Still it was a lot of fun reading and perhaps learned more about wasps than I cared to know. The writing is similar to that of Steve Berry only with a stronger focus on science.
Typically, when this reads a novel for the first time, and really enjoys it, he makes purchase of the all the authors earlier novels. Perhaps that will eventually happen with the Rollins novels, although for now it will be one book at a time.
Only Professor Ken Matsui an entomologist from Cornell University survived the attack. He and his team of scientist were on an island off the coast of Brazil where all life has been destroyed, expended, and overcome by a species outside a mind's eye. A mysterious group attacked the team murdering all of them except the professor.
Over 100 years ago a chilling secret was buried under the National Mall; amber that holds a cache of bones. It was hidden by several scientists including Alexander Graham Bell, in an effort to protect mankind. The object was dangerous and, yet it holds hope for the future…the secret of life after death. The bones contain a horror inconceivable and it is free again. It has been nurtured and established into a armament of infinite strength and malevolence, to inflict destruction on an unwary world.
It is up to Commander Grayson Pierce of Sigma Force to stop an attack on the Hawaiian Islands, but first Grayson must survive. Gray, Seichand, Kowalski, Professor Ken Matsui, Palu, and Aiko are at the site trying to stop the evil that threatens the world. Kat, Monk, Elena Delgado, and Sam Benett are putting together the missing pieces between the bit of amber and James Smithson. This threat may be more than Sigma can understand or halt. The enemy is ever evolving, growing scattering—acclimatizing and persisting despite the attempts to stop it from taking back the world it once ruled. With each adaptation it becomes tougher and shrewder. Time is running out there maybe only one option left, a desperate option. Grayson may have to join forces with the Guild an enemy of Sigma and it may mean sacrificing some one dear to him.
I have read all of the Sigma Force Novels and by far this is the best. Author James Rollins is a master at mixing history, science, action and adventure. Rollins tales are epic and they feature exciting settings, daring quests, idealistic scoundrels, action abundant, and plenty science and methodical inquisitiveness to titillate even casual readers. His characters are as large as his landscape in this massive and immensely entertaining page-turner chronicle. James Rollins blends action, escapade, past, and knowledge. I encourage readers to check out all of James Rollins books. Rollins is well known for unveiling hidden worlds, scientific advances, and ancient mysteries.
The premise of the story is imaginative and, as usual, has a basis in fact and science, the writing is smooth and flows well and the story itself is brilliantly told.
Demon Crown kept me up late many nights as I really couldn't put it down. Rollins is the master of page turners and I envy readers new to James Rollins or the Sigma Force series as they will have countless hours of joy reading Rollins work.
Me, on the other hand, will have to wait patiently until the next book is released.
