I was born in Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. I studied Ancient & Medieval History at university and am a qualified teacher.

I enjoy science fiction, fantasy and horror, both in books and on screen, as well as collecting and painting miniatures and table top war gaming. I am a lover of art, music, film and classic computer games.

I have loved cyberpunk-themed films, games and music for many, many years. This, in part, inspired my cyberpunk science-fiction books. I have also written and published horror, poetry, fantasy and children’s books.

Great thriller with cyberpunk themes to appeal to numerous audiences

Tanweer Dar delivers another satisfying novella with The Demon, continuing his straightforward, unpretentious tone, and careful examination of human interactions. Unlike The Man With No Name, another great book by him, it is told from a linear point of view with very little flashback.

This is a thriller, but it also has clear cyberpunk elements. Whether it’s the aesthetics of chrome and neon, the characters, the augmentations, the nefarious corporation, or the underground syndicate, it’s cyberpunk in many ways. Drones, enforcer droids, and an A.I. round out the ideas.

The Demon contains a whole novel worth of material told within a short space. This fast pacing owes to his efficient writing style, as he knows just how much detail and reflection that’s needed to describe a scene while keeping the writing tight and free of author intrusion, completed by his signature quick scene changes. The ending scenes do occur at breakneck speed, but despite the cliffhangers the book feels self-contained given that it ends at the perfect spot to set up the next one in what I hope will be a series. A book that begins remnant of the 2006 movie Ultraviolet soon becomes a heartfelt novel that makes a perfect weekend escape.

I feel a connection to the Demon. I too would be the guy hanging on to my old untraceable car. Although a V8 might be hard to keep fed in a world of EVs. No spoilers. But this book is fun, exciting and has heart! Drawn in by comparisons to Batman Angel and the crow. Was not disappointed! Fast paced and exciting!

Hope for the hopeless

The Demon takes on a vile corporation to save the hopeless. Tanweer Dar writes superheros that are just like the people on the street. They have no real super powers just a need for justice. As you read this you want to cheer more and more for the good guy. Such a great read!!

The Demon broods with a noir-style menace that’ll thrill fans who like their cyberpunk served with a dose of gritty anti-heroes. On the surface, it’s a cool delve into the lives of two people who are in too deep and struggling to make it out alive, but scratch away the surface, and underneath you’ll find a subtle exploration of what really makes a monster, and the price of redemption. If you crossed Frankenstein with Batman, then pumped it full of high-octane action amid the background of a neon-bathed city, you’d get something close to what Tanweer Dar has been able to achieve. This book will take you into the shadows for a glimpse of what it’s like to live and love in the dark.

With the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077, it's inevitable that scifi in this genre will be compared to the videogame.

However, for me the flush cyberpunk setting Dar's novel The Demon brings to mind more the vivid colours of Batman of the Future. This comparison with Batman continues to the dark detective-like character at the centre of the book's plot. Grittier than most dark knight stories, Dar invites us into a grim city where murder is lit by bright neon lights.

If you're looking to escape from our current dystopia into one with more hi-fi action and less social distancing, this is one to read!

The leading characters charge through an adventure of espionage and corporate greed while battling a range of foes that are all brilliantly unique. The Demon is an enjoyable story featuring a coherent, easy to follow plot, likeable and distinct characters, evil corporations, violent gangs, plenty of action and a cool car. If you're after some bedtime cyberpunk reading, you can't go far wrong with this. It's relatively short, which makes it a quick book to get through, but also left me wanting a bit more!
