An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: This supernatural thriller rises above its by-the-numbers plot to deliver a mix of creepy mood and engaging musings on good and evil. It’s still a light read despite author Andrew Pyper’s literary pretensions. The movie rights have been optioned, and the staging of some of the narrative seemed based more for big-screen bang than because it made sense. The story is told by David Ullman, a renowned Miltonian scholar whose knowledge of Paradise Lost draws him into a mystery in Venice that ultimately puts him in peril. Ullman has to fight both his internal demons and possibly some very real ones to save himself, his daughter, and maybe the whole world. Original? No. But The Demonologist still provides a bit of page-turning fun with some truly scary moments that had me shivering during a late-night read. --Aaron Knopf
The evil of Milton’s Pandemoniumcomes to life when English professor David Ullman accepts an invitation to come to Venice for consulting work—a strange offer for a Milton scholar. Desperate to escape his cheating wife and her pompous lover, he takes his young daughter, Tess, to the City of Bridges on what he hopes will be a welcome diversion. Instead he is introduced to a reality that he never knew existed outside of his books: that of dark demons looking for inroads into our world. With his daughter taken, Ullman embarks on a search for her with only Milton’s Paradise Lost as a guide. Along the way he is pursued by malevolent forces looking alternately to exploit and bury his discovery. Traveling from North Dakota to Florida to New York, he finds clues not only to his daughter’s freedom but also to his enemy’s nature and his own tragic past. Pyper’s novel takes on things that go bump in the brain and delivers a stirring entry in the supernatural-thriller genre. --Lynn Weber

"I can't see it, but I know that something watches from the trees. A density so great it bends the air, a kind of sideways gravity that pulls and distends everything around it. It communicates nothing in its swelling silence but want, timeless and insatiable. This is the territory it wanders, on and on. Ravenous with grief."
As usual, the devil has supernatural powers on his side, but has no defense against displays of virtue by the hero. This timeless tale is wrapped in a an enjoyable story and is skillfully written. It even has a few bits I found genuinely frightening.
"The Demonologist" is one man's take on Milton's "Paradise Lost." Professor David Ullman, an expert analyst of the Milton poem, discovers the hard way how it relates to his life situations. The story contains an amazingly eerie atmosphere throughout, especially within the passages detailing the devastation and melancholy emotion of those controlled by the devil. I didn't want the book to end, so I did the next best thing: I started reading Pyper's "The Guardians" as soon as I finished it. It's another good one, yet completely different.
