Wisdom (Hex in High Heels) expands her paranormal romance universe with the launch of a new series featuring a witch who's part of a supernatural military task force. Hellion Guard Margit "Maggie" O'Malley, backed by a team of assorted supernatural creatures, must protect a troublesome teen girl from the forces that want to sacrifice her to a dark Mayan god. Half-human fire demon Declan owns Damnation Alley, a club catering to nonhumans and containing a portal to the demon world. The two are drawn together by dreams and visions, allowing them to express their mutual interest even as they distrust each other in the real world. Romance and sex are firmly grounded with issues of family relations and friendship, giving this supernatural romp broad appeal. (Apr.)

The grammar itself wasn't too bad but the sentence structure was atrocious at times. This book could have used some serious editing because some sentences were worded so badly that they made zero sense.
There were way too many cliches in this book. And many of them were based on sexist sterotypes. For example, Maggie is written as a violent bad ass. Which is great but then the author writes things like "she couldn't resist finding comfort in his arms. Like a total girl." Assuming only women want comfort and implying it makes them weak takes so much away from the strong female characters the author supposedly set out to write. Especially since they're about to go off to war and she's taking a second to ground herself.
Also the whole typical bratty teenager bit with Courtney was absurd. The author couldn't simply show us how bratty Courtney was, they also insisted on telling us every single time Courtney did or said something stupid. We get it, she's a pain in the ass and teenagers are difficult, please stop beating the readers over the head with those words.
I felt like the story had real potential before Courtney showed up. The shared dreams were interesting, the characters were fun to read about, and the Mayan priests were pretty scary. But then the teenager takes Center stage and it's all incredibly anti-climatic. The priests are taken out in two seconds and the God of destruction is a woman who doesn't want to destroy the world? I guess the author thought it was an interesting spin but it was such an unfocused ending. It's hard to explain how much I was looking forward to the showdown and then nothing happened.
I wouldn't recommend anyone read this book unless they can do it for free. What a waste of money.
In this story, we finally get to know the most dangerous and lethal witch, Maggie. Maggie is one rocking officer who makes sure the world is safe from the paranormal criminals. She keeps to herself and lives for her work. Now her normally workaholic life is being turned upside down by a sexy fire demon named Declan and her newest assignment, protecting a teenager from satanic Mayans who would sacrifice her to bring back their God. Maggie has never thought of herself as mother material and it's great to watch as she figures out how to handle a teenager with alot of baggage and the fate of the world in her blood. Declan is a half fire demon who is determined to make a trouble free life for himself. He has always longed for one woman to call his own but has resigned himself to a relationship free life. That is, until Maggie strolls into his club and causes some nasty damage. Now he can't get the feisty witch out of him mind or his dreams. Maggie now has to deal with a relationship she's not sure can ever work, being the guardian to an unruly teenager with a boyfriend who is highly suspicious, and evil Mayans. This story is fun and dangerous with plenty of suspense and danger. Maggie's personality is shown from all sides and we get to see past her lethal image. Declan proves to all that not species can be labeled bad, but that there are good scattered in with them. There are some other great side characters that make up this wacky world. If you love Linda Wisdom's Hex series, you will love this fifth installment of the series. Warning: violence and some explicit content.
I loved the plot of the story and that is what had me hooked. You got to hear from both Declan's point of view and Maggie's. Declan would let you into his Demon World and what he was dealing with and Maggie would bring you into the world of Paranormal Law Enforcement.
My favorite parts in the book that had me laughing was when Maggie had to make Courtney not give away the paranormal world. She put a spell on her that made her, not say any magic or paranormal words...instead Courtney would sound silly. It made Courtney really upset and had me laughing into tears. Poor girl.
I also adored Elegance, aka Elle...Maggies personal Spider who attaches to her literally. She's a diamond-encrusted spider tattooed on her. Who wouldn't want that? I know I wouldn't mind Elle being tattooed on me. She does her own damage to bad guys...or just guys period. She brings humor also to the story.
This was my first book I read by Linda Wisdom and it won't be my last. I adore this series so far and I look forward to the next book and reading her other books when I get the chance.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal humor ROMANCE. Don't expect too many erotic sex scenes in this book. It's more of a Humorous, action packed Paranormal Romance...It does get steamy a bit with Declan and Maggie...but not like other authors that I've read.
It was great to read something different though. I always love a good laugh. I also love kick-ass heroines, sexy heroes....and even pain in the ass teenagers...(reminds me of myself a bit...LOL).
This book definitely deserves 5 stars...or maybe 10. =)
