I just wasn't as 'into' this story line as I'd hoped I would be.

Demons Like it Hot
by Sidney Ayers

Matthias is forced to watch over a woman he can't get out of his mind. Serah isn't a normal human but she doesn't understand why strange things are happening around her. Matthias and Serah must find a common ground in order to save the world.
Sidney Ayers writes a story that leaves the reader on the edge of their seat as the characters are thrown into dangerous situations. The characters are more than one dimensional, they have flaws and dreams which can get in the way of what they are supposed to do.

Demons Like it Hot is the sequel to Demons Prefer Blondes and many of the same characters from the first book show up in this book as well. I really enjoyed getting to know Serah better. She was only a secondary character in the first book, but she really rocks her own story. She's feisty and determined to do what's right, even when she doesn't know what's right. Matthias is a flawed hero who has his own issues and problems. But when it comes down to standing up for what is right, he is able to put aside his fears and protect Serah.

I recommend that you read Demons Like It Hot if you enjoy a fun, exciting romp through the world of demons and the people who protect the world from evil.

The last thing he wanted to do was to be sent back to Earth to protect Serah. After all, she's the reason he's in trouble to start with...

This book has demons, angels, imps, succubus, and more. How about a talking cat that drinks scotch and smokes cigars? Yes, it has that, too! With all this magic and mayhem going on at once, it starts out fast and I zoomed through the pages to the end. The bad guys are really, really bad and they have magic to fight with.

Ms. Ayers writes a fantasy than tantalizes. Her story is vibrant, busy, and entertaining. While all these characters have various talents and skills, she gives them a touch of realism that makes you accept the premise of the story and has you rooting in the corner for Serah and Matthias, her protector.

Matthias has a history with Serah, but he's erased her memories. When he finds himself falling in love with her and she demands to know his secrets, he restores her memories of that time. Bad move on his part, she wants nothing to do with the big bully. So they exchange barbs and barely tolerate each other's presence throughout part of the story. The sarcastic comments are great fun. I like characters with quick tongues who can tease the other person.

I loved this story. It's so good this book is going on my keepr shelf for re-reading later. I don't keep a lot of books anymore, so this is a high recommendation from me.

Talk a walk on the wild side and try to beat the devil; what do you have to lose? Maybe more than you thought...

This is a fun story but I think it could have been better.
Serah recently helped her best friend, Lucy, unleash a chestful (plus) of demons (book 1, Demons Prefer Blondes). During that crisis Serah learned she has some powers she is intent on keeping secret. She is able to smell evil demons and if her emotions get too intense she can effect things around her even by accident. The truth is that Serah has even more secrets in her family past and in her own identity that she has yet to learn.

Matthias met Serah during Lucy's adventure but wiped her memory clean of that previous encounter. Now he has been assigned to protect her as she is a pure blood who could save the world. Matthias has tragedy in his past and doesn't think he would be worthy of someone like Serah. That doesn't stop him from wanting her.

Serah may not remember their previous kiss but she knows that being around Matthias has a serious effect on her libido. She doesn't recognize her own beauty and is sure that this hunky bodyguard would never be interested in her. Right now she is concentrating on her cooking talents and getting ready to be filmed on the reality show, American Chef.

The first third of the book seemed to bounce back and forth between insecurities and fantasies of the hero and heroine as they ogled each other but tried to keep their distance. I was at a point of "Enough already! Please get on with the story!" Finally the author moved into the substance of the plot with the added character element of the American Chef moderator, Daniel, which created some jealousy issues. The plot thickens as it is discovered who the real power behind the show is, Matthias' history is revealed and there is plenty of action with a battle plan to defeat the threat of the evil demons.

I felt there was too much focus and time spent on the characters' repressed desires. I had some unresolved questions (like where Serah got her money that she keep spending so easily) and some confusion regarding Serah's lineage and just how she was to serve to save the world. I think some of this got lost in the effort to make the story sexually interesting which in my opinion was dragged out too long in the early part of the book so it may have distracted me from the plot. I think a good 50 pages of repetitive feelings could have been cut and would have improved the story. There is craziness and fun in the characters and the plot. Once I got to the action part of the story it was much more engaging.

I would recommend that you read the first book so you will understand the backstory of the characters otherwise you may feel confused. If you like the sexual tension and anticipation you may enjoy this story more than I did. As I noted, there is fun in the characters and dialogue and if you press through the beginning the story does become engaging.

Contemporary Paranormal

Serah SanGermano has always just thought of herself as a very successful caterer. At least until her best friend, Lucy and she unleashed some demons from a chest. Now Serah is trying to hide her new abilities and deny that anything is different about herself. Everything in Serah's life is changing and she isn't sure if she can keep up with all the changes. Serah wishes she could convince her friends and Matthias that there is nothing special about her that she is just a normal person and she doesn't have to face all that is happening around her but as much as she would rather not face facts fate seems to have other ideas for her.

Matthias Ambrose has been a demon mercenary for a very long time and now he is making some changes in his life. Part of those changes is his new mission and that is to protect Serah from the demons that are now after her. Matthias has secrets though that he would rather Serah never found out but if he isn't careful that is exactly what will happen. Matthias needs Serah to trust him but when she can send that he is hiding information that makes it hard to earn trust. Matthias is going to have to decide if he can live with Serah knowing the truth about him and if it would help him to protect her better.

Matthias is falling in love with Serah but he is convinced that even though he fights on the right side his past will keep him from Serah as she won't be able to deal with it or forgive for what he has done in the past but his heart isn't about to let him leave Serah even if it would be for the best. Serah is not sure what to do with Matthias as much as she denies her attraction for him she is sure that he doesn't want anything to do with her. With the demon gunning for her Matthias and Serah are finding out that they make a better team than they ever thought possible and if they can survive what is coming they just might be able to figure out what each of them feels for the other.

This story is well written and will keep the reader guessing as to what will happen next with all the action happening. This one will also give the reader a different twist to what they have read about angels and demons and other paranormal characters. This is fresh take on a theme that has been covered by others but with this one it will seem like a completely new type of story. This is one that is worth picking up and reading and will have readers looking for more books by this author.

When I chose to review Demons Like it Hot, I did not realize that it was book 2 in a series. So, it did take me a little bit to catch up as this story correlates to the first book of the series. In the first book, Serah (the heroine of Demons Like it Hot), and her best friend unleashed demons, and unlocked hidden powers. In this installment of the series, Serah has to come to terms with her powers and fend off demons that seek to kill her. Matthias Ambrose, a newly appointed palladian (think good demon), is put in charge of protecting Serah. However, Matthias has known Serah before, but he wiped her memory and he hopes that no one finds out the truth of his actions.

Demons Like it Hot is an entertaining book. The characters are full of humor and possess various supernatural powers. Serah is primarily a chef, and in Demons Like it Hot, she is preparing to be a guest on a popular cooking show, American Chef. This cooking aspect gives the book a new spin, and the setting is a fun one. Serah is in serious denial about herself though, she knows that she has powers, but she doesn't want to admit that she may be more than human. She is very stubborn on this point, and it gets really old. The girl sees and smells demons, her uncontrolled powers created chaos, and she is a target for demons but she still won't admit she just might be this "pure-blood" human everyone tells her she is. Not only is she wishy-washy on her powers, she is also very undecided about Matthias Ambrose, her protector. She is really a brat to him and she constantly goes back and forth between trusting and hating him. Matthias Ambrose himself is not much better. He is just as stubborn as Serah, and instead of telling the truth, he tries to keep secrets and makes matters with Serah worse.

The paranormal world in Demons Like it Hot includes demons of all kinds, angels, and even gods in human disguises. The world is definitely interesting, and something is always happening in the story. If the characters and the story hadn't been so hot and cold for so long, I really would have loved this one. Nevertheless, the story is entertaining and the characters are fun. I do recommend reading book 1, Demons Prefer Blondes, first though.

I received this book for review**

The Fore-Demons Council assigns Rafael DeLeon (see Demons Prefer Blondes) the Paladin as handler to Matthias Ambrose. Irate with the choice Matthias has personal reasons to object as DeLeon has ties to purebred caterer Serah SanGermano who has gotten under his skin. DeLeon informs the brooding Matthias his job is to protect his fiancée Lucy's BFF Serah SanGermano. Matthias considers Siberia instead of Connolly Park, but acquiesces.

Serah conceals her new supernatural skills that she finds as a nuisance rather than a convenience. She focuses on her try out for the American Chef IV reality show. Enter Matthias Ambrose, demon mercenary. Lucy arranged for Matthias to protect Serah, but her bodyguard wonders who will protect her from him. As they fall in love, they team up to try to save mankind.

This Demons Unleashed urban romantic fantasy is an engaging entry due to the wry banter between the lead couple; actually Serah is the protagonist who brings humor with her chats with her beloved demon and others to include some asides. Although the story line is slow for much of the first half, fans will enjoy Serah the chef and her demon lover cooking a tasty repast.

2.5 out of 5 stars. This novel is full of suspense, witty commentary, and brooding glances. So, all in all I thought it was an okay book to read. I liked the characters and the plot had a lot of potential to make this into one addicting series. However, it probably would have been easier if I read the first novel in this series, Demons Prefer Blondes. Yet I didn't so I was lost throughout this book and I didn't really get into it until about a little over halfway through.

The reasons I liked and finished the novel even though I gave it a low score:
• the camaraderie of the characters
• the few twist in the plot that I didn't see coming
• the relationship between Matthias and Serah

So, I would only recommend this book to those of you who have finished and enjoyed reading Demons Prefer Blondes as I think this could be a fun series and I don't want you to miss out on what could be something good.
