Having that out of the way, there truly is a lot to like about this book - great writing, likable and complex characters, lots of laughs, good fantasy-world building, and just great story-telling overall. Also unique is that portions of this story are drawn in graphic novel format while the rest is standard novel format.
The title, "Denial," would seem to refer to the denial of one's self - our main character early on is forced to choose between her own happiness, and that of those around her. Unfortunately, the two are mutually exclusive. The story continues on a theme of getting back what one gives in terms of kindness and respect and a general weariness of people's nastiness toward each other, often based on the flimsiest of excuses.
While this novel does have LGBTQ themes, it is not the "in your face" type of LGBTQ - more of a comfortable "it is what it is" feel that should be perfectly enjoyable to most of those who don't identify as LGBTQ.
Bottom line: if fantasy with some steampunk elements is your thing, then I do strongly recommend this book.
