The first 30 mins is mostly stretches. She does offer different levels of progression but they are basic poses. The poses arn't held for very long. I didn't get much out of the lunge series. Overall, a great stretch.
The second 30 mins is taking traditional yoga poses and adding weights. A bit more challenging, but not difficult if you practice yoga.
Overall, a good basic yoga practice but not as challenging as I thought. Her Yoga Body Burn is more difficult due to the vinyasas and her Fat Burning Yoga is also more difficult due to the continuous movement in the first 30 mins. This one compares with the yoga section in her Power Yoga DVD. Simple, basic flowing movements with brief holds. This video is NOT for "feeling the burn".
The first 30-minute section of the dvd uses no weights but instead offers interesting new variations of traditional yoga moves at an engaging pace. This is perfect for light days when you want to do yoga but don't want anything that's strenuous on your joints, and yet you also don't want something so easy that it will make you sleepy.
The second 30-min. section is more challenging. I use 3-lbs. hand weights but stronger users may certainly use 5 lbs. The moves throughout this segment challenge your entire body simultaneously: your upper body is maneuvering the weights, your lower body is holding and repeating yoga poses, while the core is stabilizing the entire action. As usual Denise gives you the most effective workout in the shortest time possible, while keeping it doable so that you stick with it. I find that workouts that are either too hard or too easy I can't bear to do again; Denise always finds the perfect balance.
The set for this workout is very colorful and appealing. Denise has a group of men and women following her throughout this routine.
I highly recommend this, as well as Yoga Body Burn and Body Makeover Mix from Denise. Rotating these 5 times a week will give you great results. And the best part is being able to choose the entire dvd or just one of the segments depending on the amount of time you have.
I agree with other posters thus far that this is not for a true beginner, although even my Jillian Michaels' yoga experience was helpful for me. However, I disagree that the first workout is "just stretches" and "basic poses", like other posters have said. Denise does quite a lot of balance work, including Warrior III, Pose of the Dancer, and Pose of the Eagle, which I wouldn't classify as "basic" since it requires some degree of disclipline and practice to properly execute and hold balancing poses. It is way more than just a stretch. Perhaps if you already have an extraordinary sense of balance then this won't be challenging for you, but if you an inherent klutz like I am, it's a workout and a challenge. The second workout is definitely no joke, either! I would suggest first-timers to it try it without weights first, I found that helpful.
Since I am used to Jillian's no-nonsense attitude, I found Denise slightly annoying, especially at first. However, this was not so bad for me that I discontinued doing the workout as I have done with previous DVDs by other trainers. I will say that I do enjoy her more relaxed pace over Jillian's and doing a wider variety of moves. Overall, a very good workout and I love the results I'm getting!
