Denon's AHD1000 on-the-ear headphones are distinguished by two signature sound-enhancing technologies. First is the latest Micro-fiber Diaphragm technology (in the AH-D5000, AH-D2000 and AH-D1000). The smaller size of the micro-fiber (1/100th compared to natural cellulose) results in a denser diaphragmatic material which increases transmission rates for better sound and detail, affording maximum presence of acoustic sounds with low distortion. In addition, a special Acoustic Optimizer (in all five models) adjusts sound pressure balance in front and behind diaphragm to deliver dynamic bass sounds. The AH-D1000, available in either black or silver, provides a more portable high-quality sound that can be easily enjoyed outdoors as well as indoors
Sound is conveyed to people's ears as waves that occur when vibrations from a sounding body causes the air to vibrate. Have a more intimate experience with Denon AH-D1000 High-Quality Headphones. Microfiber has been used to form the diaphragm so that it faithfully reproduces the sonic details and delicate reverberations that occur in concert halls. An acoustic optimizer brings out the optimum acoustic characteristics by adjusting the sound pressure balance on both sides of the diaphragm. High-quality OFC cables of equal length for the left and rights channels are used to maintain optimum sound quality. A 1.5-meter cable is provided for use when enjoying music from a digital audio player carried in a pocket. An extension cable of 3.5 meters is also provided for when the headphones are used at home. The 40mm neodymium driver delivers a frequency response of 8-37,000Hz.See all Product description

It definately took a few weeks of solid listening for these to break in. Out ofthe box the bass was twangy and weak, but after given ample time to break in the low end filled out nicely. The AH-D1000s play very low and accurately, but they will not provide the excessive amount of bass that most young people like.
I have no complaints on the midrange or highend performance of these cans, they are clear and precise to my ears for all music genres.
What I do like is the hybrid design that Denon came up with for the enclosures, it's as if you get open-canned sound with the dampening and privacy of closed headphones. They don't block out as much sound as other closed designs seem to, but they do enough to make a difference. They are also very comfortable. The leather is soft, thick, and supple and the padding is firm and relaxing. Some have said the grip is too strong, but I have found after about ten minutes with them on, I forget they are there. The extra long cable extender and 1/4" adapter are a great bundle to make this a great deal for the best sound, comfort, and affordability out of any other headphone out there. Denon hit the bullseye on the AH-D1000s in my opinion.
I listen using my computer with an Auzentech X-Fi Prelude (National LM4562NA op-amp) and from my Zune when traveling (volume levels are adequate).
In the box:
Denon AH-D1000S headphones
6.3 mm (1/4-inch) plug adapter
11.5ft extension cable
The sound is quite impressive. The bass on these is excellent after burn in, the mid-range wasn't audiophile caliber but still awesome for this price, and the treble was also great. With the Denon's I've actually been able to notice stuff about my music I didn't know was there. They sound nice straight out of the box but get even better after you've worked them a while. I let my friend use them for a bit with her Zune and she handed them back a while later with the comment of "I could feel my brain vibrating! I must get a pair of these!" And she's quite picky about her audio. They really can blast out your music. As an example, when plugged into a MacBook Pro, the audio coming out of the Denon's at full volume is louder than the MacBook Pro's actual speakers. You'd go deaf if you listened to them at that volume.
I think wearing pillows on your ears might be more painful than these. I've had no problems with them sitting on my head for extended periods of time. Though I would like to mention that they go over my ear. The product description says they're on ear. My ears aren't that small, my ears are proportionate with my head, which is pretty normal sized too I think? (Hat size is between S and M on a "S, M, L, XL" scale) You can adjust the size of the Denon's and the smallest size fits perfectly on my head. And they cup my ears. Which I'm actually much happier about, I thought I should point it out though.
I believe someone else gave them a build quality of 8/10? Yeah, I agree with that. However, someone else has commented they are flimsy. I don't really agree with that one. They are plastic people, they aren't going to survive in a war zone. But they aren't "break so much as look at them" kind of flimsy. You won't have to baby them or anything like it, but don't fling them around like they're made of metal. They aren't built like Superman, so yes, jerking them about by the cords will probably result in something bad after a while. Dropping them on concrete is also not a great idea. But from what I can tell, treat them fine and they're going to last just fine as well.
Great headphones at a great price. What more can you ask for?
When first opened the package saw some headphones that didn't look special at all. They didn't look bad but just kind of plain. Put them on and talk about compfy. Man these things were like pillows on the ear. Speaking of on the ear. They are supposed to be on ear but they almost fit completly around my ears.
Now when the first sounds came out of the cans i thought wow they sound real good. Almost like they are open cans like my Grados. So set them down for about 36 hours to get a somewhat burn in. Read somewhere that they take about 60 hours. Well after about 36 hours I popped these bad boys back on and first words out of my mouth was "it's alive inside". They were so full of warmth and stuning that I was like almost speachless. Never before have I had an eargasism but I must have had one. From what I understand these are the same thing as the Denon AH-1001 but without the little bag. So guess this review could be for that one also.
