Note: I'm no audiophile, so this review isn't aimed at techies. It's aimed at people like me who want to listen to music and occasionally watch movies in HiDef with good sound and picture, and are hesitant to attempt to set up a system themselves. This is actually the first time I've set up a home theater system myself as the family member who usually did so passed away. I had a very bad experience with Best Buy's "Geek Squad" and wanted to avoid that this time. I just couldn't see any reason to pay someone to set up a system, and it turns out I didn't need to do that. The AVR S510BT was painless to set up, and sounds fantastic. You can do this yourself! Honest! The only tricky bit was installing the firmware update. Even that was less "complicated" than just time consuming. Basically:
1) I took the new Denon receiver out of the box, disconnected the old yamaha--no HDMI 2.2 hookups thus no 4K. I disconnected the speaker wires. I highly recommend labeling speaker wires BTW. I just used post-its, tape, and a sharpie.
2) Reconnected the speaker wires to the Denon. FYI: except for the subwoofer the connections are all spring clips
3) Connect the HDMI connections for cable/ satellite, DVD, etc. HDMI inputs 3-5 are HDMI 2.2 and can do 4K. Make sure you connect your devices with HDMI cable that supports "High Speed" and ethernet. No need to spend a huge amount of money on the cables though; Amazon Basics carries them for about $10.
4) download the firmware update [...], and put it onto a USB drive.
5) plug in the power cable
6) put the USB drive into the USB port on the front of the receiver, and power it on
7) Press the setup button on the remote control. Select General > Firmware > Start. Press the "Enter" button on the remote control to select "Yes".
Note: "Checking Update File" will appear on the unit's display. The Update will start downloading and when finished, it will display "Update Complete" on the unit's display. This took me about 1/2 hour.
8) Remove the USB drive from the USB port and power cycle the receiver using the Power/Standby button. The receiver is now ready to go.
9) Run the rest of the set up programs; it walks you through the process. The receiver has a little gaget that attaches to a special port for setting up the speakers correctly. It wants you to use a camera tripod. I happen to have one, but I'm sure you could do the same things with tape and a chair.
The whole process took me maybe an hour to complete. It was relatively painless; the only complicated bits were the firmware update and the tripod thing. But I was really pleased to know that I can do this sort of thing myself; and if I can anyone can. And the system sounds fabulous! And just in time for a Star Wars marathon, LOL!
No, it doesn't have ARC, but, it does sport two spdif inputs, 3 hdcp 2.2 inputs for 4k throughput, and dts.
Currently I've got my desktop and PS4 piped in through the opticals, a Logitech Harmony for control, and the thing works beautifully.
All sounds tests from my OS checked out for digital processing, HDR throughput is seemingly uneffected, and I didn't have to spend $500 on a receiver.
Also, and this may be valid for all new receivers, but the auto-calibration with the external mic was fantastic... cut out a lot of fine tuning after setup.
So far, granted only a few days, I've had no issues with the receiver besides finding the perfect profile. Regardless, they all sound great.
So, if it is stereo you are after, this might be a great amp for you. But if you want 5.1 cinema sound, Get a Pioneer.
